I did that in my first van, with the egg box toppers, but used a double quilt. used but the egg box wasnt sufficient support, so undid the lot.

I used a double duvet cover. Stitched down to make two pockets, one to fit the foam overlay and one to fit the single duvet.
I stitched this pocket to only half way down so it is easy to get the quilt and foam into the pockets, and put a couple of poppers on unstitched section, but probably not necessary.
Cost me £60 for the double foam overlay which I cut in two.
The duvet covers were £16 each, they did have same in another shop for £10 but not in RED, just green and I really wanted red.
Bought a 15 tog quilt for one at £10 , I have a 4.5 tog one already for mine.
So this worked out at £50 each and I had great fun making them.
I am also making slippery fabric 'wrap round bags' with ties so I can roll them and squeeze them as small as I want. Can't be doing with fitting the roll into a bag.
Slippy fabric so they slide into luton easily.
Can't wait to use them now.

I have been a busy busy bee! Now I have my new bed kit, I have ended up with a house full of duvets and sleeping bags, despite scattering them around the house on numerous spare beds!!
So I was wondering what to do with two virtually new but cheap Argos poly cotton bags that have been usurped by numerous others over the years.
Well rather than dump them, I have cut them to fit as 'throws' for the seats in our little van.
This will give us even more softness under our memory foam mattress toppers , as well as protecting against sun fading and accidental spills! As they are blue and white check pattern they look good too!

Hi I am trying to attach a photo of the DIY sleeping bags that I made in situ. During the day we use one as a very comfortable base to sit on and roll the other one to act as a back rest.
They are so nice and cosy at night and when we are travelling, they stow away over the cab.

Hi dorsetdimension
Would love to see what you have made.
Sounds like a good idea to use it on seat during the day as well. I tried it too but as one of the quilts is 15 TOG it made such a wide roll that there was no room to sit. My quilt is a more manageable 7 TOG so would work fine.

Hi Viv
I would love to show you but I really cannot master the attaching of photos. It makes a really comfortable seat for daytime. We now don't need to take the infills and we both sleep so much betther on the memory foam mattresses. We fold one of the quilts into four longways and this sits along the back of the seat to make a comfortable backrest.

That looks good dorsetdimension,
Ours look similar and I will be using them in next day or so as we are off travelling soon. Great when something you have made, works, isn't it.

We used our homemade 'Romalays' on the recent rally and I have just replaced the duvets and foam into the freshly washed crisp red covers, which has reminded me to give some feedback.
Actually they were really successful and one of the best things I have ever made for the little van. We slept extremely well and in fact better than we ever did before in the old sleeping bags! On a couple of mornings I woke up and really thought I was in bed at home. They were really comfortable and cosy and easy to cool off as well as there was no zip to undo. They did not slip around and the foam made a really firm but soft base.
Worth all the effort of sewing. I have to say though that I did find a pin in each of them where I had meant to pop a stitch in. Luckily they did not cause any injury to our toes!
