There is a C15 based Romahome on Ebay (Item no 270163756086) advertised as a 1996. This cannot be as the photographs show that it is a 1990 or earlier camper shell. Important remember that Ant says it is not possible to put a romahome shell onto a newer vehicle successfully because they were glued too well to the older van.

A timely reminder on the pitfalls of buying from Ebay, as two people on this forum have recently found out what seems a bargain is not necessarily so.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention Peter it could have saved someone from a costly error.

3 of the romahomes on ebay today must be old shells on newer vans. Only one of them admits to it in their description.
Perhaps Ant could give chapter and verse on the safety reasons for not doing this, e.g. using the van with the lower load rating.

Hi Peter. Romahome body swaps are getting more and more popular, there are many pitfalls to be aware of; The original C15 Romahome body which was mounted on a cut down van was lighter than the later body that was mounted on the platform cab, this body would go onto the modern 600kg van provided the rear springs were assisted as the Romahome original. I've never seen a swapped body with any rear spring assistance. However the original body was never designed to come off and a great deal of cutting would be required to get it off, the question you need to ask is "was the strength that was cut out during its removal ever put back in during its remount?" The problem is you can't tell by just looking at it - that would make me leave well alone. The modern 600kg van will not take the later Romahome body wt. Also the 600kg van never had power steering so why would you spend all that money for a modern vehicle without PAS? Some companies who do the swap may well do the job properly and re-instate strength removed during the swap but nobody will know until it fails. Better the devil you know I say. Ant

Hello Ant,
How on earth can someone without your knowledge and expertise know that they are buying a bona fide second-hand Citroen Romahome? I feel very unconfident about buying now that I have read this thread, although I'm pleased that I read it. Although this particular ebay auction had closed, the details are retrievable, and I noted that the van had had five previous owners. Caveat Emptor and all that, and it seems to me to be likely that the ebay seller would himself have been completely ignorant of the fact the vehicle wasn't original. It would be very good, when looking a Romahome vehicle over, with a mind to buy, to have a rudimentary check list, Romahome-specific, but similar to the one which any sensible buyer uses when buying a normal car.
I feel quite discouraged and unconfident now, and will be extremely wary.
Thanks for sharing your insight and knowledge, Ant, and if you can ever be bothered to write down some basic golden rules re. buying second-hand Citroen Romahomes, please let me know!
M. D.

One on evilbay today with 3 days left to run.
Says it is a 1995 but the camper shell is an earlier type because you can still see the van sides

There is anXreg year 2000 C15 Hytop for sale at Romahomre dealer Tc Motorhomes that is definitely not what it seems. The camper shell is at least 10 years older than the registration and they want £10,995 for it!

Hello Ant, It would be very good, when looking a Romahome vehicle over, with a mind to buy, to have a rudimentary check list, Romahome-specific, but similar to the one which any sensible buyer uses when buying a normal car. M. D. I could probably write a book on what to look for now. And if I'd had the book when I went to buy mine, I would have walked away and kept my money.

Re. observations made in this thread about Romahomes for sale on ebay, has anyone got any first impressions, comments, to make about the Romahome which is being auctioned on ebay at the moment, 1990 Citroen C15D Romahome, item no. 270177366851? Anything not seem right, at first looking? Thanks.

It looks in a lot better nick than mine, which I bought off Ebay for £2,000. If I were you though, I would go and view it before bidding - they always look a lot better in the photos than in real life it seems to me. This does look a good one, and sounds like it's been looked after - but I would still go and view and check that everything works before you bid. Good luck! ;D

Romahome dealers TC Motorhomes in Kent have advertised for sale an X reg (year 2000) C15 but the photos clearly show that the shell is pre 1990.
I though that we should be able to trust the dealers!
