I've had my dog insured with Direct Line for years, but the latest quote was very high at £20.36 a month, with an excess of £80. As she's getting on now at 9 years old, I wondered if any other insurance co would quote cheaper... Tesco dog insurance has come up with a quote of £8.36 a month, with excess of only £60. The only difference is the vet fees cover which is for 12 months from onset of condition up to a max of £2,500, whereas the Direct Line cover vet fees is 12 months cover up to £4,000, the rest of the policy is identical. This doesn't include (on either policy) for dogs travelling abroad. After a great deal of deliberation, I'm going to go for the Tesco quote, I think. Is anyone else insured for dogs through Tesco - are they ok with claims? Would appreciate any further info, not insured anything with Tesco before.

Have you tried PetPlan (www.petplan.co.uk)?
Their cover is usually fairly comprehensive and they're reliable at paying claims. I've used it for rabbits but not for dogs.
The Tesco quote sounds very cheap to me (a bunny premium is about £6 per month) and I've generally found all the Tesco services I've used to be good. If you have any doubts, why not contact your vet and ask if they've heard of any clients' experiences. Vets generally hear the good and bad because many cases have to be referred to the insurer before a treatment or procedure is undertaken.
I'm sure a vet would be pleased to advise because a pet owner with such insurance tends to be a very good client!

Right, here's the update! I tried a quote online from petplan and it was £17-odd. Phoned the vets but the receptionist wasn't allowed ? to recommend one insurance over another, so no joy there. she did tell me to ask certain q's though, and what to check for in a policy schedule. Then I went on-line and waded through reviews on Tesco, Petplan and Direct Line insurances for pets. They were all 50-50 - some were saying they were great, others saying they were awful (for all three) so no joy there. I also phoned Tesco to ask the questions I needed answers for - a for life policy? Yes. No age limit? No. How long when you make a claim? 2-6wks. Vets paid direct? Yes. So I've had to make my own decision really, based on what I've read and had explained through websites & talking to the companies. I've cancelled the Direct Line and gone for Tescos - it's a lot cheaper and I'm on a low income. I still don't know if I've done the right thing though. I shall just have to wait and see. Hopefully I won't need to make a claim anyway!
