I often go for years without using a bus but when I heard on the radio today that all over-60's (guilty, Your honour...!) now qualify for a pass that gives free, off-peak bus travel throughout the UK, it occurred to me that this has got to be worth getting - particularly for a Motorhomer. Rather than taking the van for a short drive to the nearest town or pub whilst camping, a free bus ride sounds like a good idea.
I just have to figure out where to get one from
Doug

It is going to save me £50 getting to and from Birmingham Airport, with a bit of hassle and time, but I shall try it out. free bus, free train, and the same on the return. saving £50 now that cant be bad. Unfortunately, no use to me to visit family weekly in Derby, would take 4hrs each way, only takes 45mins by car. Just too old for that amount of aggro for 1 day's visit.

Terry has had his pass now for some time, it is called the Freedom pass here and all over 60s get one for buses and underground. It is worth its weight in gold as it gives free travel over the whole greater London Area and now he can use it all over the country as well.
Well done Lunnie I hope you enjoy it and make the most of it.

This is my neck of the woods We are planning to go to those parts also, at the end of April. Thinking of starting off at a site we read about somewhere (maybe on these forums?) near St Michaels mount. Doug

Starting in Devon, Hidden Valley, takes camping cheques. An excellent site stayed there last year. Visiting various relatives there and hopefully a cycle trip along the Tarka Trail. We then move on to a CL site near Truro, Cornwall is memory lane as 'He' is a Cornishman! Counting the days, lists written!

Hi Terry had to renew his last month, they stagger the renewals alphabetically here or the post offices would not cope with demand. He arrived at post office a week too early and had to go back, (luckily he had his Freedom pass to pay the fare for the two journeys!!!!!) they have stuck a label over his current one which gives him the countrywide and London transport access. The free national travel is only on local bus routes that provide free travel for local people, it does not cover routes between cities. Can't wait to get mine as it will save me a fortune!

Viv, it all depends if the route between cities is classed as a local bus. There is a bus from Nottingham through Derby and onto Manchester, classed as local, so I only have to drive 40miles to Derby leave my car at a son's home and bus to Manchester, so if I wished I would save 100miles in fuel!!!

The good old Transpeak bus (uses the A6 all the way) - we use it frequently to do one-way walks in the Peak District.

This is brilliant and apparently it should be possible with careful planning to get right around the country using local buses and we will certainly be able to move around easier when we are away and want to leave the vans on site. Hope someone starts the guide book soon!
I just hope they don't stop the scheme before I get mine!!!!

Hello Viv, Great minds think alike eh? I was wondering if it would be possible to do a trek right around the coastline of the UK just using the free bus pass. Maybe a group of like minded fit OAP's with tents could do it and raise funds for Help The Aged by getting sponsors. Wish I could but still work full time so I wont get to use my free bus pass as much as I would like. Pen

This scheme is going to be really great as it means we can make use of all the local buses.
I particularly fancy some of the longer routes like Wendy's Transpeak following the A6. It would be interesting to gather information about particularly nice routes from others. I can recommend the one from Dartmouth round the coast in a double decker through Slapton and on to Salcombe. Absolutely stunning views and you could hop on and off wherever you wanted.
