We thought it would be nice for the children we look after to let them try and grow some tomatoes this year, trouble is neither of us have got green fingers so we don't really know which variety to go for.
So are there any expert gardeners on the forum who can recommend an outdoor variety tomato plant which would be suitable for the kids to try and grow.
Any tips gratefully received.

Hi
I would always recommend growing a cherry tomato called sungold. I doubt you'll be able to get them as plants, you'll need to grow from seed but they germinate easily. I have grown them outdoors in growbags against a warm wall and they were fine. They are a really sweet orange coloured fruit, the tastiest i've ever grown!!

Cheers Glen I will look out for them, I like cherry tomatoes, so sweet and the kids should enjoy them too.
Is now the right time to sow them?

Another fun thing for the children to grow might be a couple of sunflowers. See how tall they grow. Can't eat them though!

Thanks Moya, we have done that in previous years so we thought we might try the tomatoes this year for a change.
But they do like to see the sunflowers grow to see who's grows the biggest.
P.S. Its great to see your smiley's back on here, we have missed them.

W/E was excellent, 2 great bands, a days fishing in between. The site was adequate, bit noisier than we are used to having only used club site so far but was only a 2 mile walk to the concerts with a pub halfway between. Got a bit wet but hey, who cares if your having fun!! Off to kent/sussex for a fortnight next weekend, can't wait!!

did you ever get the tomato seeds planted?? if you did, how are they coming on? Hi Glen I opted for plants in the end, we got a cherry tomato bush variety, can't remember the name, they are going fine we got three plants and two have a tomato on each the other one is a bit behind because I managed to put my size 9 on it when I was weeding and some branches broke off. They've all got lots of flowers on so should produce some good tomatoes. The kids love watching them, we got one each for the three eldest children (3-4 year olds) and they go out every morning when they arrive at our house to see how they are doing, they are getting quite competitive about whose tomato plant is the biggest etc. Graham

glad they are coming on well, we too ended up buying plants instead of growing from seed, but luckily we found seedlings of the type we wanted (sungold). We bought a few more than you, 12 to be exact!! They are doing well, we are getting loads of already but we are growing in a greenhouse. I'm not suprised the kids are enjoying growing, its highly addictive especially when you get good results!
