It's that time of year again when the big horrible black leggy spiders invade the house. We had one come in the other night as big as a mouse! Any tips on keeping them out?

I understand that there is going to be a glut of them this year and they are going to be bigger and bigger. they apparently mate in mid September so when you see them they are off to look for a partner. This was in the newspaper so it must be true!!!!!! We have loads of the smaller 'mottledy' ones on our windows and even on the washing line. We must be quite bored lately as I have taken to feeding them with bits of meat and watching them rush to cocoon their 'catch'. Fascinating - they like cheese!!! Viv

Thanks Viv, that's really cheered me up! I certainly won't be feeding them - all they see of me is a clean pair of heels!!

Hi Viv - I tried the cheese trick with one of our spiders and it loved it! It was a bit of a fiddle trying to get the cheese to stick in the web, but fascinating to watch the spider wrap it up and take it away. Couldn't get it to work with meat though (kept falling off rather than sticking). I managed to get a small piece of dried-up meat to stick but the spider didn't want that and cut it off the web and dropped it!!
Audrey (are we sad or what??)

I'd be happy to feed cheese to a little mousey but count me out when it comes to sticking it to webs!! I don't really mind the ones that stay put in the garden, even though the do have a habit of making their webs around the washing line! The ones I need rid of are the ones that are so big you can see their knees! They come in the house and always seem to make a run across the room while I'm watching TV! Why do they always make a bee-line for me (or should that be a spider line? ) Some even had the nerve to move in while we've been away so we've hoovered every nook and cranny and Graham has sent them packing back down the garden!!
