Could anyone recommend an awning for my Duo Hylo. I would like a free standing unit. An idea of the price and where I could obtain one would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Alan - and welcome to our Group. I bought this tunnel one last year from Davan Caravans, Weston-super-Mare ( 01934 510606 ) for £99 - it's called a Trigano 'Bivouac Car', ref A7400/1, weight 9.7kg. (click on picture for a better view ) It is very succesful, and measures 3m wide by 3.3m deep. The only drawback is that there is a gap on the lhs as you look at the van - this is because the flap is a sort of quarter circle, starting in the bottom lhs, ending just to the right of the door. We haven't found this a problem, and consider it very good value for money. Not sure if they still have any in stock, but maybe worth a ring to check. Are you coming to our inaugral meet at Chipping Norton next weekend? It seems very quiet on this site today - maybe everyone has been sunning their selves in the garden!! Mike

Hi Alan, We have got the Movelite awning and found it easy to put up and it has certainly stood up to all types of weather. It fits nicely into a bag (supplied with it) and is easy to dry off when you get home. We just drape it over the bannister. Here is a link so you can see all the details for it. www.outdoorfocus.co.uk/awnings/Outdoor%20Revolution/Outdoor_Revolution_Movelite_info.htm This is a newer version, we bought ours last year. The only thing we have found is that it isn't very successful trying to fit it over the top of the roof. We found that it kept slipping off because of the beveled corners. It is fine though attaching it to the ledge. Hopefully you can see what I mean in the photos.

Hi all this new one looks like it has a frame instead of the elastic. Not sure which is preferable. Has anyone seen both actually in action ? Viv

I think the frame is for demonstration, I might be wrong, it has been known !! I guess it is showing the "figure of eight" strip and a J rail that they use on flat surfaces. I think it would be a bit fiddly. Perhaps someone else has used this system and could comment. Derek

Hi Derek Yes that is the one I think you are right, on looking at the pictures again I think it must be some kind of demonstration frame.
I wonder what the difference is from last years apart from the price of £10 more.!!!!
I really fancy an awning but am still getting over spending out £000s for tent and loads of equipment last year that we only used once before we realised that we needed a van again!!!!!!!!
Car boot or E bay next year!

Viv Hi Viv, Yes the frame is just for demo. The only difference as far as I know from ours is that they have changed the shape of the windows and the colour. You don't need the figure of 8 fixing if you are using it on a rear door van. Maybe they think we can see better with the new shape windows. You might be able to pick one up on Ebay or an ex demo one somewhere. We actually saw an ex demo one for sale when we were on holiday in September for £50! We were thinking about buying it and selling it on Ebay but the poor van was loaded up so couldn't bring it back with us.

Surely all Romahomes should be supplied with a freestanding annexe. Then nobody would want to buy anything bigger than a Romahome. Think of all the resources and money we'd save - it would be a better world!
We have a Caranex (see pics etc at http://www.caranex.co.uk). Beautifully made, Design Centre award, very light, about 5kg, and compact so tucks in nicely behind the seats. It gives a ground area of 7ft X 5ft and fits onto the ledge below the perspex window. The H4T version fits the Hylo and there is another version for the Hytops (see caranex website - this is very informative). After a bit of practice we can now erect it in about 5 minutes so it's viable for an overnight stop. It's easily made freestanding (great to go off for the day and leave all that weight behind and guarantee your pitch). They are about £350 new direct from caranex but regularly come up new or near new on EBay for half that. We bought our very near new one for £160 including postage.
It has really transformed our Romahome experience. Great for the Porta Potti and we put everything we use regularly from under the seats out there (smaller items live under the seats in plastic boxes and just lift into caranex). With the Romahome door open there is so much more room to move in the kitchen area and there is none of the constant lifting of seats to find things which characterised and frustrated in our pre Caranex era. Only disadvantage is packing up a wet and muddy one!

Hi Trevor I think that just about sums up all awnings, great when they are up and a pain to pack up. Welcome to the site from another Hylo owner. Do you have any pics of the Caranex on your van? I am sure folk would be interested. We were looking at the Caranex but ended up with the Harrison Motor Porch Awning. We bought an Avon Quicktent last year. It is intended for one night stopovers but we have used it all the time this season. We even managed to get it freestanding by borrowing some ideas from the Caranex. Little job for the winter is to sort out some sort of curtain to block up the hole when it is freestanding. Derek

Hi Trevor
Welcome to the forum, another hylo owner, we have quite a few on here.
You are right about an awning changing the Romahome experience, we had a Harrison free standing awning when we had our Duo and we always used to put it up except for one night stopovers, we found it great for putting our stuff in where we could get at it. Also great for hanging wet clothes in etc.
Regards Graham

Think of all the resources and money we'd save - it would be a better world! Hi Trevor and welcome! I don't think Romahome can cope with the number of freestanding awning orders they have now, we sold ours some time ago to a chap who had been waiting 6 months for Romahome to get stock in! so to give one with every van - you'd have a loooooonnnnnng wait for delivery!

I have both the Movelite and the Harrison awnings. The Movelite ripped on it's first outing! they replaced it, used the new one in April 3nts no problems, used it this weekend with the Bed pod, and the pod elastic came away on 1 corner 2nite, the awning itself is ok, but not impressed!
Harrison awning, bit heavier, but you are able to attach it to the C15 Hytop and you do have poles to hang coats etc, but only 1 door, both have + & - all depends on the situation to which you use.

We have a Movelite awning for our Outlook. Easy to put up & plenty of storage space. If the van is positioned carefully the canopy/tunnel that links it to the van can be slid over the roof and guyed tight against the back of the roof vent keeping it on securely.

Viv Hi Viv, I think the Movelite is a good choice. We haven't had any problems with ours and it is a useful size, 8ft x 8ft. It sounds like you would get a better fitting on the roof than we do on our Hylo as well. When we get on site we normally decide which opening we will want to use most and keep that clear of our clutter. It is nice having the option with all the zip up sides.
