With the winter fast approaching up here - snow on the hills and the haggis beginning to hibernate - we have been thinking about insulating the cab of our Outlook.
Does anyone know of something equivalent to the Silver Screen which would do a similar job?
With thanks
Graham

I think there are many variations on the same idea. Some fit inside the van, some have suckers, some have ties. Personally I think it would be money well spent to buy yourself a true Silver Screen made to fit a Romahome. We haven't bothered to get one yet for our Dimension as we have blinds and curtains but when we had our Duo is was one of the best things we ever bought. Keeps the van warm (cool in summer), and also stops people seeing in at night if you happen to move the curtain between cab and van while asleep!!

Hi bandg,
We have not camped in the winter but will be doing so this weekend so will probably start to think about one of these silver thingys. As the forecast is for really cold weather I will see if we need one but from what the others say they do seem to be very effective.
Do the haggis pester you in the summer by begging for food and scratching at the van, as we have had all sorts pestering us and I would like to be prepared, for when and if we go to Scotland.

We have one - a genuine external Silver screen. We think that it is fantastic and there is no condensation on the windows in the morning. We have the quilted one with the drop down front, so we can still see out without having to remove the whole thing if we are staying put. We bought ours from e-bay - it was a new one.

Hi bandg. Get the external silver screens, the internal ones can leave condensation on the windscreen due to the cold air gap between windscreen and silver screen. The original one comes from J & M Design 01274 872151 they will sent it to you in the post direct. They are a tight fit so none of your native wee beasties will be able to run off with them! Ant

Thanks for all your comments. I think we'll go for the Silver Screen from J & M Design.
There's not usually much problem from scavenging Haggis but it is advisable to hang your food twelve feet from the ground. Or is that for the polar bears?
Seriously though, Scotland is always worth visiting.

Seriously though, Scotland is always worth visiting. I'll second that we spent a fornight at Oban last year and it is a lovely place to visit but I wish the weather was a little warmer and drier, but the scenery is fantastic. We have some other members from Bonny Scotland, John and Dot Hedley who live on the West Coast with their Romahome called Betsy. Regards Graham

We can also recommend the genuine Silver Screen. We keep the curtains back at night and use the cab for storage. It makes the van feel bigger.

It's a few years ago now but when we bought the Silver Screen for our Duo we went to collect if from J & M Designs in Yorkshire. It's a real cottage industry, run from their own home, they are a lovely couple and even did a trade in of our old C15 Silver Screen against the new one, we can really recommend them. They have a website now - www.silverscreens.co.uk/

We also use a silver screen on our Dimension, we dont have the padded variety, but one called 'Solar Frost'. We chose this as we are 'fair weather' campers, we keep the windsreen covered with it whenever not in use and through the winter months.
It is black on the reverse, packs up small (will go in bottle holder in door) and we use it instead of blind and pop on curtains when away. A lot quicker and we tend to leave it on if not moving, keeps the van cool if very hot outside.
I found the maker very helpful, they provided a small brochure with all their products and gave uses for each.
Hope this helps.

I was just about to post a question about silver screens, when I spotted this thread. We shall acquire one post haste. After a windy weekend in Blackpool it's just what we need, see above picture.

Hi, I'm new to the forum so hello to everyone. Having read this thread I decided to buy a silverscreen for my C15 Romahome. When I rang them, they said that they can not currently provide them for this vehicle as they now buy their material with all 3 layers ready joined and some of their patterns are no longer useable. All they could offer was their Solar Frost which they compared to a shirt against a quilted coat. Anyone know of any other options apart from looking out for one on e-bay

Hi Steve
A BIG welcome to our forum, hope you have lots of fun in here, we are a friendly bunch.
Regarding the silver screen, Mike (aka Yamaha) has got one for sale, look in the "Items for Sale or Wanted" section it might be worth asking him for measurements to see if it would fit your C15.
Hope that helps

Hi Steve and welcome. You don't mention who you tried for the silver screen. We got ours from Taylor Made. They are very helpful if you give them a ring and they do internal & external. This is their website with the phone number under Contact. www.taylormade-window-covers.co.uk Hope you have some luck with it. Moya

I have just sold a C15 Romahome with a silver screen. We bought the screen secondhand - one of our best buys. We had 10 days in France in Feb and the silver screen was frozen on thje outside but no condensation and the van was nice and warm. I have just bought a Duo Oultook and the first extra that I bought was a a silver screen. The best suggestion I can make is to keep an eye on all the motorhome website adverts or evento post a wanted ad.

Hi all, Re Silverscreens, we have a 'Taylormade', silverscreen, for our C15 Hi-top, made by Taylors of Honley, near Huddersfield, Yorks. Their address can be found in MMM Magazine, they are also a very friendly company, their product is well made and does the job of keeping the van warmer in winter etc.Their prices are a little better than Original Silverscreen, and you could possibly have it delivered within a week. All the best, Jack & Patty, Cornwall

Thanks to Derek with info on Shurflo Pumps and the link to O'Leary's. They sell the material and suckers to make your own interior silver screens. We have internal silverscreens for our van at present, I did wonder if I could alter them for another van but could start from scratch. Will have to do the sums in the future. olearymotorhomeshop.co.uk/ look for the screens, blinds and curtains section.

After a wonderful Autumn week in Northumberland our attention now moves to the possibility of winter camping. I suspect a Silver screen would be in order. I was interested in this thread. I have a few questions if I may. Do the silver screens come in different sizes? Is there one especially for Romahomes or is it a one size fits all arrangement? If so, how small do they fold down for storage when not being used? How much do new ones go for?

Hi Chrissy and Martin
You will need a silver screen for your particular vehicle if you have a Berlingo based vehicle you will need one for a Citroen Berlingo if you have a Dimension you will need one for a Citroen Relay etc.
I would say the one we had for our Berlingo folded down to about the size of a pillow. Obviously a Relay one would be slightly bigger. When we bought ours a few years ago it was about £65. You can sometimes pick them up second hand.
Hope that helps.

We bought a genuine Silver Screen for our Berlingo HyLo earlier this year. Cost about £100.00, delivered about 48 hours after ordering and it fits superbly.
Very effective in preventing condensation on the inside of the windows and enables us to use the van without drawing the curtains between the cab and sleeping area. This gives the impression of doubling the interior volume!
Only problem with it is packing it away for an early start if it has been raining during the night. A good shaking removes most of the wet, but it still needs drying off later.

I use Silver Screens on my Kangoo Roo - but mine are designed so they fit directly onto the front windscreen and side windows from the inside using suckers.
There can be a small amount of condensation but they dry quickly and take only seconds to fit/remove without having to get out of the vehicle.
