Hi folks - just wondering if anyone on here is interested in my Avon awning, now surplus to requirements, as we've sold our Duo Hylo!
It is advertised in the "For Sale" section - it's just that I am about to put it on eBay.
I realise it's almost Christmas - and an awning is probably not top of the shopping list at the moment - but if anyone on here IS interested I am quite prepared to wait till the New Year, when the coffers will have had time to recuperate!!

Sorry Mike - it is too big. My first choice would be a Caranex, so always have an eye on Ebay. Small is beautiful!

Hi Jacquie I have just looked at the caranex, what is the advantage over the movelite?? I had kind of settled on the movelite but wonder if you know something I do not, the movelite is much cheaper and has windows and doors at all sides, but am I missing something?
I will be getting something whatever as I want to treat myself for Christmas!

Hi Viv, There's nothing wrong with the Movelight, just that the Caranex shape is really efficient, it's super strong yet light, very easy to erect for one person and very weather and wind proof. it fits the romahome well - no gaps, is freestanding. Yes, very expensive, but if you camp in gales on cliff-tops as I often do, you need to depend on it staying up. Sounds like an advert for Caranex eh?

Thanks for that Jackie, I am afraid our days of intrepid travelling are long over and this includes windy cliff tops in gale force winds, so back to the Movelite for us softies. Mind you, you do a good job for the caranex advertisers!! Viv

We had a caranex which we used on an estate car. They may have changed the design but it was not very stable in it's freestanding mode and the cover over the opening was only held down by two ties at the bottom corners. It also collected water on the roof when it rained. I can't compare it to the movelite as I have never seen one of those. Sorry to put negative comments, but the Caranex is an expensive purchase and just thought that these were things to think about.

Hi Wendy, Did you have the extra poles they recommend for freestanding? I've seen one in use by another romahome owner in Scotland who swore by them. He said he could put it up on his own in five minutes which sounded appealing. My main criteria is to have an awning that doesn't seem too "intrusive" visually, but if you say the thing just isn't stable, I think I'll do some more research. You're right about it costing a fortune! That's why I've been trying to hunt them down second-hand but they are difficult to find - I too this to mean that maybe people hang on to them because they're good. Hey Ho! I've been wrong about these things before. Let me know what you think. Jacquie

Yes, we did have the extra poles for freestanding. It was quick to put up and it was only unstable when freestanding - attached to the car it was fine. I've now had a look at the pictures of the Movelite and without having actually seen one, that would appear (to me) to be a better option.

Did you know that on Ebay you can post a "Want it Now" request? You might find someone who would be willing to put their awning on with a Buy it Now so you could snap it up! pages.ebay.com/wantitnow/index.html

I have an alert set up if someone posts one to sell, but I didn't know you could make a general request! I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice Wendy, The Movelight looks great, but I'm looking for something smaller - more of a porch really. I'll continue to hope for the elusive ebay bargain. Just so you know, I wasn't urging anyone else to buy a Caranex. Viv was simply wondering why I was attracted to one. Take care all!

I've now had a look at the pictures of the Movelite and without having actually seen one, that would appear (to me) to be a better option. Hi Jaquie, We have had the Movelite awning for a year now and it really has stood up to all weathers even when freestanding. The only thing is I don't know whether it would be that easy to erect on your own. If the wind has been blowing I have had to hang on to it while OH takes the final pegs out. Once you have done that it's fine - just collapses onto the ground and take out the two sets of poles. Hope this is of some help to you.

Hi Jacquie Interested to read your thoughts on the Caranex, we had considered buying one but to be honest the price put us off. I was also concerned that the sleeve would cover the fridge vents and the windows. They mention Romahomes in their literature but do not have any pics. They do look a little strange when freestanding, again pics of the H4TH and the H4T would be useful. Have you seen the Quicktent for the Outlook? We have the the version for the Hylo and are very pleased wiith it. I decided to try freestanding it this year, it needs a curtain but that shouldn't be to much of a challenge. Good Points Really quick to put up and even quicker to take down Very easy to dry Light weight and packs up small You don't need curtains It has a breathable groundsheet so when you kick over the dogs water it goes straight through Not So Good Points Flaps around a lot in the wind, drives you mad . We have made some clips to fit the edge next to the van so that limpets can be used to tension the canvas which help. If you want windows it hasn't got any. Derek

Well I have just ordered my Movelite awning and at the same time I have ordered the cut to size (for the movelite) breathable ground sheet that looks just the ticket. Won't we be posh when we go camping next time!!!!!!
Viv
PS will be booking for Spring meet tomorrow, I just keep forgetting, but I have now written a note which is something I have to do all the time now.

Derek Hi Derek, If a quicktent for an outlook came up on the small ads tomorrow, I would buy one. I belong to the cheapskates club (along with a few of my fellow forum members), so I want one used. re the caranex: very astute of you to point out the potential problem with covering fridge vent. I can't find one single picture of the darn thing on the net mounted onto a romahome. Definately plan to ring up caranex to ask. Awnings sure seem to excite passions on these forums!!! Why oh why can these things never be simple. First my eberspacher dream, and now my caranex dream....fading. Boo Hoo.

Viv, the movelite does come with a groundsheet, which you would need to use if using the bed pod. otherwise the mesh eco groundsheet will suffice. I have the Movelite, and used the bed pod, but it didnt stand up to having a double mattress inside with 2 teenage boys, one of the elastic broke, sent it back for repair no problem.

Hi I received my movelite awning and breathable groundsheet ( I was just about to say 'spreadsheet' I have been on the computer too long today!!!)
i wanted to open it and set it up but Terry suggested it might be silly as it is blowing a gale at the moment and it is all neatly packed up in its little bag. He rightly suggested that we try it at the March meet if that is when we first go camping next year. So you must not all laugh at our attempts to erect it without practice.
I can't wait to see if it makes a difference and if it has been money well spent or not!!!

Viv said " I was getting a bit anxious that you had all changed your minds and Terry and I were going to be on our own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Damn - she's twigged the plot!! ;D Congrats on getting the new awning, Viv - I'm sure you won't have to struggle on your own with it at Devizes - I'm sure we can adopt a "you hold mine - then I'll hold yours" policy!! One benefit you will have that you may not have considered - with the van door open, and the heating on, you should have a very snug extra area ( to entertain and thaw out guests ). Mike
