Right you lot, hands up how many have a habitation check done on their van, is it really necessary every year for small vans, how much does it cost and what exactly is involved.
Our Dimension is 05 reg, do we need a habitation check yet, perhaps Ant would like to comment on this one as well.
Regards Graham

Hi Graham. The Habitatin check is a licence for the dealers to print money! Having said that there are aspects of it that are worthwhile doing each year. Sadly if you take your van for an SMMT habitation check 80% of it is just nonsense ie opening and closing of cupboards, drawing curtains, making up of beds etc. The gas checks and mains electric checks are worthwhile doing each year as the constant vibrating of joints ,both gas and electrical, can lead to leaks and electrical shorts. Sadly many dealers only offer the full SMMT check and charge a small fortune for work that you could do most of. If possible you should ask for a price for a gas and electical saftey check. I don't really want to turn this forum into a dealer sales pitch but for comparison purposes I charge £50 plus vat for the gas and electrical saftey check. Common sense does for much of the annual needs of a Motorhome and especially a Romahome. Ant

We had our first one done in October. We bought our Duo Hylo last September so thought we had better be good and get it done especially regarding the gas and electrics safety aspect. It cost £170 and I must say Ant I did think that as you have said the other checks that were included we could do ourselves anyway. Not sure about the damp testing. Can you do that yourself? We will certainly bear in mind what you have suggested for next year.

Good for you Ant, couldn't agree more. Electrics, gas and diesel heating must be checked but much of the rest can be done by the owner. Still should be done though, little job in the Spring for us fair weather campers Link for those who need the checklist. www.ukmotorhomes.net/annualcheck.shtmlDerek

The Habitatin check is a licence for the dealers to print money! Thanks very much Ant, I sort of suspected that was the case, and its good to know that we can have the most important Gas and Electricity checked at a fraction of the cost of a full SMMT check, I think a visit to the Baltic Wharf campsite in Bristol and Avon Motorhomes in the spring is a definite must for us.
