Does anyone have any experience of fitting reversing sensors? My son in law has them on his car and swears by them and I thought they could be a very useful addition to the Romahome. I have seen them on E bay from about £15.00 upwards and they don't appear to be too difficult to fit. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Malcolm. Reversing sensors are a good guide, but not to be trusted completely as its difficult to get them to detect all thin objects like pipes or posts. The only thing you need to be aware of when fitting them is the height off the ground. Romahomes are a bit close to the ground for the fitting instructions on most units, however if you look carefully at the sensors they can normally be rotated so they face slightly up hill, if you fit them like that they shouldn't detect the road surface behind you. Fitted a cheap set from ebay to our C15 when we had that. Found them very useful. As Ant says they come with wedge shaped washers that allow you to change the angle. I put them in the bumper moulding and then parked at a distance from our gate which is solid. I then played with the washers until I got the correct reading. They do help a lot but you still need to walk round your vehicle before starting to reverse. Haven't fitted them to our Outlook yet, it is one of the jobs to do. I have found though that if I set the interior mirror down to the dipped position I can use the lower window in the back door as well as the door mirrors.

Hi Malcom, I fitted a set of reverse sensors on my Roma last April, they were bought off ebay for about £12 delivered!! Pretty simple to conenct up too... I just threaded all the cabling in thru the moulded gaps underneath the sink/cooker/beds etc and Don't think I even had to use a single drill....Then again - yes i did coz the actual sensors on each side i did drill a piolet hole for the screws.... Hardest part was finding a suitable place for the little box with the alarm and lights on that I would b able to see when reversing... So far so good, not had a single mishap with it, I even use it to reverse right up almost touching the wall and door of my garage... normally within a few cm's.... Good luck in fitting, but it shouldn't take long Best regards, Jamie

Thanks Ant, Peter and Jamie, Looks like I've just given myself another job to do. I have been using the lower window Peter, but it only shows the little bit in the middle. Jamie I will send your manuals tomorrow by email. Regards to all three

I had reversing sensors fitted onto my new Romahome Hylo as an optional extra offered by Freeborn Motorhomes. This was because I have to reverse into my garage. The reading cuts out when I get closer than 40cms and in point of fact I know my position better by aligning with points on the side wall of the garage. So it isn't as useful as I thought it would be. Richard.

That was one reason I wanted them Richard. Well they are now fitted and working and I must say I am most impressed. I can safely reverse into the garage and stop with about 20 cms to spare. I suggested to Hilary that I should fit some to her car and all I got was a rude reply.
Seriously though I think they will be a great help.

I have one which I've been waiting to have fitted as I'm rubbish at wiring things. However, after calling out a mobile mechanic to fit it - he hummed and harred then disappeared to go and find some more wire and a soldering iron... said he would be back the next day, but didn't show and I haven't seen him since!

Malcolm The reversing kit I've got is supposed to be fitted using the reversing light - I don't have one on the romahome! I do have one, as the mechanic found when he came - it's still fitted and still working - underneath the back step of the romahome on the tail of the pick up, so like the spare wheel which is also there, it's absolutely no use! I did contact the vendor, who said it could be wired into the fog light, and then you'd just switch on the fog light when reversing, but the mobile chap didn't think much of that idea and decided to do a proper job and wire it into a dashboard switch. Hence dashing off for more wire, etc. Edited to add: he was going to charge me £25 for fitting, but I've a feeling that quote will be revised as it's a bigger job than he thought. Perhaps I'm getting ripped off here, but I don't know any diy-ers who could do it for me. My son was going to fit it, but I've been waiting for months for him to have a go!

Well Jay Jay, I would think £25.00 reasonable.
You said that the reversing light was still working even though its in the wrong place. He could still have wired into it because it would do the job of switching on the sensors which after all is what you wanted and even reversing without the light, the sensors should make sure you won't hit anything. That's what they are for!

I have just seen reversing sensor on jml web site while I was looking at their blu step. Its been advertised on t.v.and would be useful for getting out of the roma and only £9.99 Has anyone got one of these yet? Are they any good? Will they take a heavy weight as Derek has been eating too many wine gums since his birthday. ;D (I think the reversing sensor was £12.99)

One takes 300lbs (21 stone ish), the JML does not give a weight. My personal shopper thought they were a bit on the small side for a caravan step. We don't use a step anyway as the Duo Hylo threshold is the same height as the step that Romahome supplied. Derek
