I have a 1988 Citroen C15 Hytop Romahome with a 1100 cc petrol engine. I think the engine is a bit underpowered & struggles over steep hills. I've been told that one cannot replace it with a diesel engine as the mountings may be different. But would it be possible or feasible to put in a higher powered petrol engine (say around 1700 cc's) Any mechanics or anybody with experience of this out there who could give an opinion.

Hi,
I've done quite a bit with engines in the past and can pretty much back up the info you have had about the petrol/diesel mounts being different.
You may find that the petrols have common mountings but the difference in physical size between the 1100 and the 1700 may be a problem. Is there anything inbetween, maybe a 1300?
Of course the best person to ask advice from is Ant, he will be able to tell you definitively, what you can do with swapping engines.

Hi Jack Quote from this site www.citroenvisa.net/vindex.htm"The commercial variant of the Visa, the C15, was also a big success. Production started in 1985 with the 1.1 petrol and 1.8 diesel engine. Later also the 1.4 petrol was available. " The petrol engines were the Peugeot TU so this link may be useful peugeot.posiklan.com/engines.shtmlI think that the Peugeot model that is equivalent to the Visa is the 205 but I am not sure. Looks like the 1.4 will fit the engine compartment but don't know if it bolts straight in, as Tim says, best ask Ant. Derek

Thanks lads. Whether the extra power gained would be worth the hassel is questionable. Maybe Ant will advise if he picks up this thread. Jack

Hi Jack. Sorry I've been on holiday at the NEC show for the last 10 days!! Not very busy this year compared to others, never mind. Regarding your engine swap thoughts, the 1.4 engine is a more powerfull thing than the 1.1 but sadly is not a bored or re stroked version of the 1.1 and does not just drop in without any trouble. The diesel version with the 1769cc engine will take the 1905 diesel as it is basically the same re stroked engine. Although I've never done it you would probably have more luck putting the petrol version of the 1905 cc ( XUD engine) as it looks like it has the same mounts as the diesel so the fixing points would be there once the 1.1 was removed. Having said all of that I would be concerned that the extra power would not be matched by the brakes stopping power without uprating them, you now get into a cost effective question. I honestly don't think it would be on an 1988 chassis. Hope thats not depressed you too much. Ant

Ant, Thank you very much for your advice. I think you're right about the cost consequences of upgrading to a higher powered engine. (Its a bit like buying a new suit & then discovering that you need new shoes to go with it & perhaps a nice new shirt which in turn needs a new tie to set it off). Kind regards Jack
