I have been researching ferries for my trip to France. I live in Plymouth, but the Roscoff crossing is quite pricey, and as I am planning on touring for the summer my destination port is not really important and the cost is. I have booked with Norfolk Lines, Dover/Dunkirque. Admittedly it is a 4am crossing, but the cost was amazing. Crossing on June 1st and returning on Sep 12th....£28 return (yes, return!) for a C15 Hytop and 2 passengers!! (I didn't get a rebate for travelling alone lol)

Having gone for very cheap crossings at unsociable hours a few years ago, my answer is 'never again'. But if it suits you - go for it. It's also a long drive from Plymouth to Dover at each end of your trip. Good luck with the trip and enjoy it.

I'll let you know! But I would rather drive a few hundred miles and have a short crossing..last time I crossed to Roscoff the weather turned about 1/2 hour into the crossing and it was so bad they kept reminding us where the muster points were!! REALLY scary, mountainous seas and everyone being seasick..for nine and a half hours!! That's my personal 'never again'

I don't like long crossings either, but it was the unsociable hours that got to me. I do like my sleep at the right time! ;D

We are the opposite we would quite like long crossings, we have done Plymouth - Roscoff several times and had an overnight crossing with a cabin, its like a mini cruise, part of the holiday.
Its more expensive obviously but if you are going to Brittany it saves a long drive and a lot of time and diesel.
Mind you having said that we usually get a good crossing (he says touching wood), the crossing Playallday did sounds horrendous.
£28 certainly does sound tempting and you have obviously got a long time in France to take your time and go wherever you are going. We only have a fortnight to so need to get where we are going fast so we can start enjoying the holiday.

Regards Graham Yes, I agree, I spent many happy breaks in Brittany and my holiday always started the moment I boarded the ferry...but after that last crossing I choose to spend as little time as possible on the high seas!! I am lucky that this time I have all the time in the world! Jean

Hi Jean, Shouldn't be debatable what your preference is - whatever is good at the time! I usually go with Norfolk lines as they have some fantastic deals. A lot of the other lines ie: LD and Brittany have the nerve to charge me for the two dogs (who only stay in the van) on both crossings despite having no paperwork to fill out for the outward. Cheeky! Norfolk, Seafrance, P&O all only charge the return since they have tons of forms to send to Defra.
Incidentally, things are starting to hot up for my plans to tour Morocco. Talking with Ray from Desert Detours who does 'loose' tour groups for motorcaravanners there. I'm looking at spending 2-3 months. In a way, I think I'll miss having my lovely discreet Outlook, but it's the shower and toilet in the Trigano that'll make a long tour possible. Bring it on!!

Its not fair, all you lucky people who can have a 2-3 month holiday in your vans I really envy you, roll on retirement, meanwhile we will have to make do with our measly 2 weeks in France.
