Hi Ant - another fridge related question for you! We have a 1993 Hylo that we got last year and when we last went camping we thought the electric part of the fridge wasn't working. We used it on gas fine and going down the 12v seemed to be working but when we plugged into the site it was not getting cold. Well today my OH took it out to try your upside down trick and said it is only a 12v and gas fridge - so that's why it didn't work!! My question is is there anyway we can "convert" it into a 240v fridge so it will work off the hook ups on site. Reason being i don't like using the gas - always scared stiff it will leak or something, even though i can get it checked by my brother in law who is corgi registered i still dont like gas! I have been looking at replacements in case it cannot be done and the rm123 is over £300 - although i have seen the electric cooler type ones for about £90 but are they any good? They do ones you can stand on the side like a normal fridge and they can run off 12v and 240v - have you any experience of them? Any help gratefully received!! thanks alot smudger

Hi Smudger. You can convert the fridge to work on 240v. You'll need a 240v heater element, a "Ranco fridge thermostat and Knob, a fused switch (mains) and some wire. All can be obtained as spare parts from leisure spares. The fitting is quite straight forward, the heater element just slides into the tube provided next to the 12v element which is next to the exhaust on the back of the fridge, drill a hole in the bottom of the fridge back wall inside so that the thermostat knob can easily be turned in the hole. connect the thermostat to the knob thats poking through the back of the fridge, fix the thermostat in place. wire up the heater element via the thermostat ( live in to one side of thermostat, other side to heater, other heater wire to incoming neutral, earths together. Then just fit a switch in the feed wire that you can get at once the fridge is refitted. Ant
