My L reg Hitop has a water tank, should there be a drain plug,? if not how do you empty it? Please don't say pump it out, as that is my next question. When I turn on the sink tap the pump sounds as if it starts, but nothing happens. Someone told me to fill the tank as full as possible and then give it thumps like heart massage as there was probably an air lock. Reluctant to fill right up as will have to bale out again. Please help, how do I check the pump is working etc. OAP and not very good at DIY but short of cash, so simple as possible please.

Scruffin. Sorry you can only pump out the tank there is no drain. To get the pump working, switch it on, wait a few seconds and check that your feet aren't getting wet! then the quickest but most undignified way is to suck on the tap until you hear the pump change its buzzing to a gurgling, then get out the way the waters coming! You can use a bit of tube to fit over the tap rather than get a crick in your neck trying to get your mouth to it. If the tap pumps a bit of water but not a full flow, switch it off for a few moments to let the air settle and try again, it should pump ok. Ant

Thanks Ant, will go out now and try not to drown. I take it there is no way of fitting a drain pug? I have had caravans with onboard water tanks and could drain them. thank you for a very good non technical suggestion. Caroline

:)Thank you, I now have pumped water for the first time for a year. Horrid taste in my mouth, but what the h... The local dealer had suggested a new pump, a new tap etc. I was fairly certain that I had an air lock, now cleared and know what to do in future. Probably very basic to you but to those of us on small income and loving our older vans, such a wonderful help. Thank you for spending the time to get us on our way smiling Caroline

don't forget to put some sterilizing fluid or tabs in the water tank (full) then flush it through the pipes and leave to stand for a while, then empty completely and flush through with clean water after that. then refill. Some nasty bugs can live in water tanks.
I think it's best to empty them when not being used as well, as they grow mould and all sorts when water is left lying in them.

Thanks very much for this advice. I have only owed my Duo Hylo for 10 days now but thanks to all the advice on this site I think I m becoming a bit of an expect at looking after it. I had taken it into a garage and they of course said new pump. I was not convinced so after reading your info Ant I went out an tried. Hey presto all is now well. I am now sterilising the tank using Milton fluids. Thanks Derren
