Is anyone going to France over the summer? I am planning travelling around from May-September. It would be good to meet up with anyone if our paths should cross. I'm busying myself, like Jayjay, with getting the van up to scratch and kitting it out with things to make life pleasant. I might be spending months in the van, but I don't intend to live without creature comforts..lol It will be my first long trip and I'm doing it solo Jean

Wow Jean! I thought I was a pioneer just going to the Outer Hebrides! ;D And only solo as far as Inverness, then I pick up a friend and co-driver (and hopefully engineer!!) I think I remember you saying you had a TomTom? - one feature I'll never use, but you will is that little warning telling you which side of the road you're supposed to be driving on... Don't think I could ever get the hang of that! Are you in the AA? Do they cover France? I have loved doing up my van and kitting it out. One thing I've noticed is that I've become a 'gadget man' - I'm a complete sucker for 'things that might come in handy'. Latest buys have included, sat nav, TV, aerial, folding washing up bowl, travelling dog bowl, and a small fire extinguisher. I've spent more on the engine though, that took some time, work and loads of money! Good luck on your travels! ;D

Good luck on your travels! ;D Thanks Jayjay. I'm getting very excited about my trip,,never done anything like it before, but always wanted to..the joys of retirement!! And I'm with you on the gadgets, I will be a traveling gadget show!! I have to get a new mot before I go as mine runs out before I get back so the van is going in for a check-over on Wednesday and having new brakes fitted and a new CV boot cover(?) and I hope not too much else as I am doing it all on a shoestring. As for breakdown cover, I was quoted nearly £400 to extend my cover to Europe for four months by the AA, which would have meant shortening my trip by some weeks, so was going to risk not having any, but I'm insured with Saga and it turns out they do it for £97 for a whole year, which is cheaper than full AA UK cover!! So I've left the AA & signed up for theirs. Great deal.

Starting from Andorra - Perpignan - Burgundy - Annecy. Then on to Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, where I will be from Jun 11-25. Hi Peter
No, not there yet, have to get an mot as it runs out in August and I will still be away, but I am now booked to leave on the 29th.
I have been looking for a smart, easy way to record my travels, thought about using my Via Michelin programme and saving the routes, but I love what you have done on your site. what did you use?

Hello Jean
We are sailing on the 25th May Newhaven to Le Havre, £250 return with outside cabins both ways, that's with LD Lines.
Only got a fortnight unfortunately so hope to cram in as much as possible.
We are hoping to tour round Northern Britanny with our Touring Cheques haven't got a definite plan of where we are going exactly depends how we feel on the day, we don't book any campsites just turn up with our touring cheques and stay for as long as we want then move on.
We'll give you a wave if we see you. ;D

Jean If you mean the maps, last year I used Autoroute on the laptop as my GPS/map and saved the track to create the maps. The problem was I didn't like having the laptop out in view all the time when I came into town. Now I have a PocketPC with MioMap installed and it will also save a track. I will plot the tracks on Autoroute again for the web site. It is handy having a timed gps track so I can match photos with where they were taken and make notes on future overnight wild camping options. The writeup part I do by hand. You will have a great time! Peter

Thanks, Peter.
Yes, I want to track my route and match it to the photos I take as well.. I have actually been practising today with my via michelin and it tracks the route visually, then I can 'snag' the screen and upload it to my blog....sorted!
