Has anyone successfully used wifi in France? Will my UK wifi stuff work over there? I went to France last week to check things out and forgot to take my laptop with me and it will be my main contact while I am over there. Any advice or info gratefully received. Jean

We have used wifi in France and there is no problem with it. Some campsite have it but you have to pay a fee to obtain the password. We also use the computer as a tv mainly to obtain weather reports etc.

I read somewhere that McDonalds in France have free Wifi access, not tried it though but might be worth pulling into the car park and giving it a go. I don't recommend the food though, can't imagine dining in McDonald's when in France - ugh!
Come to think of it I can't imagine dining in McDonalds in this country either.

I haven't used WiFi in France but will be in June, and expect it to be similar to Uk use. I use BT Openzone per minute which is 20p +vat in the Uk. In France they use partner suppliers Orange France 9.5p, Hub Telecom 9.5p, iBAHN 10p, So why are BT so expensive here? The other half of the equasion is knowing where the Hotspots are in France. If you haven't tried it before then hhtp://jiwire.com will give you a free download of all hotspots in France, which suppliers and even some Free hotspots, (and yes, at least one is a MacDonald's). Watch out for the jiwire Hotspot Helper as this is a short term sample and then paid for, I don't need it but you might of course.
Good luck to both of us.
Colin

I have been doing some research on the subject. It seems that BT & Fon (a French provider) have joined forces to expand the provision of 'hot spots'. You can become a member for free if BT are your provider and if you have their 'Total' broadband package any minutes on the BT/Fon hotspots are included in your allowance and BT Openzone is free for the first 500 minutes per month. Great deal! Just got to get the laptop up to par now Jean

That sounds a great deal, what a pity we are with Virgin, unless we can find any free hotspots or campsite with wifi it looks like we may have to rely on internet cafes, then again it may be nice to have a holiday from the computer (if we can bear it ;D).
Two days and counting.

Hope you have a great time..I'll look out for you and give you a wave when you come through Plymouth for the ferry ;D ;D Well if you do wave it won't be us ;D we are going from Newhaven to Le Havre. We have previously done Plymouth-Roscoff but thought we would do Newhaven this time as our son lives near there and its a chance to pop in and see the grandchildren. If your 8 days goes as fast as the last 8 days has for us it will be here in no time. Hope you have a great time. One and a half days and counting. Graham

Hi all from, mostly, sunny France. Just to prove that wifi does work OK, this is being sent from a campsite near Vichy where the connections FREE. We have had trouble finding some wifi sites that do what they say in terms of connection companies, but a lot of MacDonalds have free access. And you don't even have to go in, Graham! Still have two weeks to go so might hook up again. Anyone heard where Jean is?

Nice to hear from you Colin, hope you are enjoying your holiday in France, you lucky so and so. We didn't manage to find any wifi connections when we were there a few weeks agi but then we didn't really try very hard. I'll have to try McDonalds car park next time, glad you don't have to order Le Big Mac. Graham
