Does anyone else use their motor home/camper van to go to work in, albeit not every day in our case? If you do have you had the same problem as us trying to get insurance? We are insured with MCIA who we are pleased with and have no problem. All the usual motor home cover and Social, domestic and commuting cover. I still like to shop around just in case there is any one else cheaper but I am now going to admit defeat! Every time I ring other companies and mention that we need cover to and from place of work they say no. Anyone else found this or are you all lucky people and don't do the work thing anymore? Or maybe you use another vehicle to go to work.

Hello Moya
I haven't been in the insurance industry for a few years, but I have never heard of a problem with going to and from work. Certainly if you use it for work there are questions, although some, like the CoOp, only have reservations if you are a salesman or carry tools. I would ask them to specify where it says you cannot use it to simply go to work and to come up with a reason why it is different from, probably, every car insurance on the market.
Good luck
Colin

I insured mine with NFU Mutual, and as it's my only vehicle I certainly use it to get to work. They added a clause which said something about commuting included and that was that. The best price too and no problem to set up.

Hi Moya We have just insured our 2004 Romahome Dimension with Sureterm Direct (Tel08702020230) for £298 fully comp, with uk breakdown recovery, 90 continental use, and commuting to and from place of work. So far seems quite a good deal. worth a call!

Thanks for your replies. I must admit Jan I haven't tried NFU so might give them a go thanks. It is a mystery though PM as I rang Sure Direct last year and as soon as I said I wanted cover for commuting to & from place of work included they refused point blank. Wonder if they have changed things since then? Have to try again me thinks. I have asked the various companies Niloc why they won't cover it and all they have said is that motor home insurance will only cover social, domestic & pleasure.Even tried Caravan Club & Camping & Caravan Club. The first year we had it I think I rang every company I saw advertising motor home insurance and gave up. Thankfully MCIA came up trumps. Last year I tried a couple and decided that if they are all saying the same it was a waste of my time and phone calls and stick with MCIA £238 for the year which was a good price. Renewal due beginning of September so I will see how much it is and if it has increased a lot then I will put my patience hat on and try again. It is hard work though.

Hi Folks
I am insured with Tesco and I need business insurance as I occasionally need to travel in connection with my work. I did find that some companies would not insure me for business but had no problem transferring my car insurance to the camper with Tesco.

I am insured for travel to and from place of work, also by me for use in connection with my business. Policy is with NU through a specialist motorhome/caravan insurance brokers, Comfort Insurance. I'd recommend Comfort, they gave me very helpful personal service. Phone 020 8984 0777, email info@comfort-insurance.co.uk

Hi Moya
We changed from MCIA this year for our Dimension and we are now with SAGA, we got a better deal and I'm sure it includes to and from work although no for business use, we don't use it for to and from work as we work from home, we specifically asked about business use but they wouldn't do it.
I think you have to be over 50 for SAGA though, so if you are just a young whipper snapper it won't be any good for you. ;D

I have just insured the car with Saga Graham and thought I would try them for the motorhome insurance. It was my phone call to them last week that made me put this post on. Guess what they said? A big NO! Explained that we don't want it for business use but purely to cover going to and from main place of work, and that is very rarely. Still said no. Just a thought Graham, when you get back, if you get time could you have a look and see if it commuting as well. If it is I will ring them again. Thanks.

Hi Moya
Yes I will have a look when I get back, as I say we work from home now so don't need to and from work. I was sure it said that but now am having doubts but will let you know, we are back on Sunday.

Hi Moya
I've just checked my insurance with SAGA and I am sorry I have misled you, it does say EXCLUDING travel to and from a place of business, its just as well I don't travel to work now as I would have been uninsured. When I did travel to work I used to use the van quite often to go to work if Pauline needed the car and at one point when we had a Duo we only had one vehicle and I used it all the time to go to work, I am wondering now if I wasn't insured, although I was with another company then, Liverpool and Victoria.
Hope you get yours sorted, sorry for the confusion.
Graham

Rather late in reading this post - we have business cover for our campervan, also had it for our previous one. NFU are excellent, no problems and very reasonable. I saw someone mention what they pay for a Kanga Roo, we are only paying that price for business cover with a Trigano Tribute. OK, shouldn't be on here ;D

We ended up sticking with MCIA as it had hardly increased from last year. I am going to get a quote though from NFU next year before renewal due so I can compare the two. It is amazing the amount of companies that won't insure the van as soon as you mention that you want to use it to and from place of work.
