We are also considering buying our 1st motorhome. Having had really good experience of VW people carrier we are looking at Van conversion.
Anyone out there with experiience of VW?
Also any views on wheelbase, parking, turning circle in general on any van?
Thanks Colin

Hello there Bro! Colin is my big Brother everyone - I've told him he will get all the answers he needs here, don't let me down! ;D Seriously though, I think there are some knowledgeable folks on here who should be able to help.

Hi Colin
Welcome to the forum, I do believe that Derek has said that he did a conversion on a Bay window VW at one time, so hopefully he may be along soon to give you some pearls of wisdom.
I am sure we had some other VW owners on here too.

Hallo Colin Welcome to the Forum! I hope that your sister hasn't bullied you into this. ;D I wouldn't hope for too much help on here on this subject, in fact I think I've only seen the letters V & W together a couple of times.
We did have a VW van conversion ( a 1997 T4) for a couple of years before we switched to a Romahome Dimension. It was an Autosleeper Trooper and this model has a raising roof which we chose for access under low barriers etc. Unfortunately we found the lack of locker storage to be a problem when we went away and we seemed to travel with the floor area full of stuff. In view of this problem we decided to change to a hightop. Drawbacks to VWs - a bit narrower than the other makes/models available and generally more expensive for the same age/conditon. I would suggest that you visit a lot of dealers and look at a lot of different models. I would be pleased to try and answer any questions you might have.

Hello Colin,
I had a 2001 VW T4 before we got the Dimension. It was a Reimo conversion, rising roof so we could get under most height barriers. However elevating roofs do have drawbacks - less storage space than a hi-top, and with ours, the sides were canvas and were quite draughty in the wind.
I must say that I do like the T4 - good fuel economy (I averaged 39mpg overall for the 2-3 years I had the van) and the rock-and-roll bed was much more comfy than the Dimension. Pleanty of good conversions to look at on the T4 base, too, some on the long wheel base which gives oodles of internal space.

Hi there i had a VW transporter Reimo conversiona few years ago. It was great for driving and parking and visability was better than my car. but i found the narrow 4' bed just a bit too small. unless the two of you are both slim things it does get a bit tight. Liz
