Hi Ant, I have just bought a 1996 C15 hytop, I would like to be able to use it in the winter and I read Peter Jennings article in the Roma magazine, he mentions the Eberspacher heater which sounds fabulous, I have looked at their website but it doesn't give info on how much they are or how easy to fit. Do you know anything about them? liljo

Hi liljo. The eberspacher is a good heater and works quite economically, however if you do most of your camping on sites its cheaper to use an electric heater. The eberspacher would cost over £800 to have it fitted by a dealer, it's not a particularly complicated job but does take time and require more than your average diy tools to complete. How many winter days will you use the van while not on a site with electric hook-up? I suspect a £20 fan heater on the mains will be worth getting and trying out first before getting a heater fitted. I would agree with Ant on this. I am glad I have mine, which came with the van, but when on a site with electricity a cheap electric heater works fine and uses no gas.
When I am far from gas fillups, like here in Bulgaria, I don't use it because I am trying to make my gas last as long as possible. I will even run the engine and blow a bit of heat into the van (and charge the batteries a bit) if necessary first thing in the morning.
What I would really like in my next van is a heater that runs on diesel and has a 240V heating element built in.
I don't know why Eberspacher didn't slip a little 1000W hair dryer element into the heater. It would be pretty easy to engineer and provide built-in convenience for heating when on the grid.

Thanks for that guys, I probably won't be spending much time on site's, more like visiting people and having my own sleeping space but £800 is a bit much yet. I guess I could carry an extra battery and use the heater that's already in the van? liljo

If you are visiting people could you use an adapter for your electric hook up and plug it into their electric. Like THIS
