I would like to bring to the attention of all RAC members, and prospective members, changes made this year to their term and conditions. When I bought my Romahome, I rang the RAC to check that my new vehicle would be covered by my membership. After some time explaining what my new vehicle was, I was assured that I was covered. Included in my membership renewable details this year was the following amendment, "vans, pickups or car derived vans can be covered upon payment of an additional premium of no more than ten pounds". I rang the RAC who after a long debate as to whether I was able to be covered, finally agreed to renew my membership, If I paid the extra ten pounds. Had I not checked, and had called them out with my current membership, I would not have been covered in my Romahome HiLo.

Very interesting. We have breakdown cover with Saga insurance and it is specifically for the motorhome.
It is very time consuming trying to get the best deal and this bargaining system is a pain - even though it works. I sometimes wish for the old days of lack of choice and standard prices!!!!!!
RAC should have made this clear though as loads of people must be affected.

Well I know that the AA cover without question.... They came out for me after a little electrical fire and got me home safe and sound with no issues what-so-ever. The best thing about the AA I found was that they cover all my vehicles, so my Bike, cars & roma are all sorted!

I just had a look at the RAC web site. The terms and conditions document says that the maximum permitted length is 18ft. Romahomes all fit within that limit I believe. The way I read the document is that it is only "car derived vans" that are longer than 18ft which are affected. Here's a link to the document. It's the table on page 21 where you need to look. www.rac.co.uk/web/breakdowncover/uk/terms_and_conditions.pdfOn the plus side, by looking at the document, I just realised that my Romahome will be covered for roadside assistance in southern Ireland (which is exactly where we'll be taking it in a week or two) Martin

I renewed my policy in June, and nothing was said and the Romahome has been piggy backed home by them previously, so they know it is a Romahome for the past 6yrs.

Hi I've been an A.A. Member since 1968. ( Almost a Director !!! ). They say you are the member not the vehicle, you are driving. As a passenger of another car we had mechanical problems I called them out on my membership, no problem. But even they stipulate a length of vehicle that they can handle. No problem with the Roma Length.

We use Britannia Rescue www.britanniarescue.com/They are cheaper than the RAC and AA, and you get a discount if you are in the CSMA or other public sector organizations. No probs with motor caravans, up to 8 metres long I think The RAC do muddy the water don't they The Romahome is a motorised caravan built on a car derived van chassis. Derek

We insured our car this year with Lloyds TSB we got a better quote than the renewal from MCIA and also got FREE 1 years breakdown with Green Flag including European cover worth £111, I thought that was a brilliant deal, probably a one off for this year but next year I will shop around again and see what is on offer.
We stuck with MCIA for the van insurance because that's the best deal we got, we have the van insured for breakdown with Halfords cost for breakdown and national recovery is £39.99 pretty good deal compared with RAC and AA.

Thanks Martin, for pointing out what the RAC terms and conditions document says. I checked this myself and rang the RAC back. After a long disscusion with a telephone representative, they said they would ring me back after checking their rules. On ringing back they conceded the advise they gave me was wrong, and have ammended my policy. As for cheaper providers, everything I have read about them is that they are an inferior service. I have been a member of the RAC for 33 years, they cover me when driving any vehicle, including my motorcycle, and have always been very quick to respond when needed, which admittedly has been infrequent.
