Hello all & Pauline, cat expert. We have Barney as you know, but we have now aquired another male cat, about 1 yr old. He has been DONE but we are having big big problems with him wanting to attack Barney who really doesnt care about the new boy on the block. He is completely dissinterested and laid back and we are worried that if the young one dont behave , then he will have to find board& lodgings elsewhere. Any advice please. Getting desparate. Dont want to have to re home him but just dont know what do do. Helpppppppppp Penny

Oh dear poor Barney. Not sure if it is too late to try this, but it is information I found from a website on how to introduce a new cat, I suppose you could always give it a try:
The answer is that when you introduce a new cat you have to do it slowly, and create an isolation room for the new cat (includes food, bed, litter tray), while the existing cat has the run of the house. Slowly you introduce the scent of the new cat to the old cat and vice versa. You can also put the existing cat in the isolation room while the new cat gets some freedom in the house. We had some hissing and spitting when the cats happened to see or smell each other but this has gradually subsided. The new cat was even out in the garden at the weekend and caught a bird … so was definitely settling in.
Anyway after a careful week of slowly introducing the 2 cats together it is amazing how adaptable they are. I was amazed how my old grumpy cat has just accepted the new cat, and amazed how the new cat has got used to us and got into a routine.

Thanks for that Pauline. We have a huge cage which we swop the cats about in but the young one is not happy with Barney so it looks like he will have to go. I have been in touch with a local cat rescue place who said they can take him this week but I feel so guilty. He has had a rough start to life and we did hope we could get him settled but we have to be practical. Mojo needs to be an only cat I think.

Hi Penny
Just a thought, how long is it since he has had his things off.
It might be that the hormones are still running through his body, and you have to give them time to dissipate, he my be thinking I am a full blooded male and I want to be boss.
I had that sort of trouble with NIQK when I first got him, at the time I also had an elderly rough collie and he kept trying to mount her and of course she didn't want to know.
So I had his things off and I thought he would stop almost straight away but he didn't, at that time I knew a vet and she told me you must give it time, and I think it was about two to three months be for he finally stopped, that was sixteen years ago so I am not sure on the time but it was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be.
Ask Barneys vet, they will know
It seems a shame to get rid of the cat if all you need to do is wait a month or so. HTH

Thanks for that Martin. Yes, the vet did say it would take time. We will see how it goes then and keep you posted. He is a cutie and unlike Barney, he seems to like me. Penny

An up date on the new cat situation. We have got to the " cant be bothered to spit& snarl anymore" stage and they have been in the same room without tearing each other apart but we cant leave them together yet. Yes Martin, it is fun having a cat that dont like you. Having it on your knee and knowing that at any moment its going to have your hand in its mouth, yea lots of fun.lol. Penny
