Pick up on the 13th, but would like to disappear that weekend for our first outing. Be glad to hear from anyone with news of any events in Feb that I can use as an excuse for a weekend away.

Hi dancer, I am based near Portsmouth which never seems close to anything!!
Hi glenw, thanks for reminding me about valentines, I would have been in the dog house rather than the romahome.

Congratulations! We have just got back from Sandy Balls, Fordingbridge, New Forest and I was going to suggest it. Just checked though and no availability for that weekend. It is a good one for the winter as full facilities and not too pricey. Sorry I can't think of anywhere else that is open in the winter in these parts.

I've come across the 'Wild Camping for Motorhomes" site. If you don't mind a flannel wash rather than a site shower is this generally acceptable.... or frowned upon by the sopisticated motorhomer?

I personally wouldn't frown upon it, I know a lot of folk like to wild camp and good luck to them, its not for us though, I wouldn't get a wink of sleep, I'd be listening to every twig cracking outside. I think you can camp safely for a fairly cheap price these days, if we want to go back to basics and have no facilities there are lots of CL's or CS's that are perfectly safe. Graham

CL's are the 'caravan club' certificated locations, the 'camping and caravaning club' has certificated sites, CS's. They are caravan sites that are independantly owned but are affiliated to the clubs and reach the clubs expected standards, but are only small, accepting 5 units only.

Some CL's and CS's have just a tap and a toilet emptying point and are only a few pounds per night, some are more sophisticated and have toilets, showers and electric points and are obviously more expensive.
There are lots dotted around the country and range from a working farm to someone's back garden!
They are all only allowed 5 vans at any one time and you have to be a member of the respective club camp there.

I'm a 'wildcamper' (I use kitchen roll with shower gel rather than a flannel!) and seldom, if ever, use campsites. For me, the idea of having my micro-motorhome is that I can travel anywhere and be completely independent and self-contained living almost secretly in the middle of nowhere in semi-isolation. I've only ever used a camp site for about 3 nights - when the kitchen roll and shower gel would no longer suffice; for a mains hook-up to recharge camera etc batteries and once in the middle of winter when even I gave into the cold in my uninsulated Kangoo Roo and appreciated the benefits of hook-up for my fan heater! Apart from that, I'm a 'wilder'. When 'wilding' it's also good to get to know locals - in a remote part of Yorkshire I found villagers were generally keeping an eye on me and one person even used to pop across to me with a daily weather forecast and suggestions on places to visit, sharing valuable local knowledge re best routes to take. I've been wild-camping for years and love every minute of it!

I am going to try and get out and about as much as possible so wild camping seems a good option as i thought sites seemed quite expensive. But joining a club seems a good idea to save money and open up more options. Can anyone recommend a guide book showing sites nationwide?
