Hi I'm probably boring people senseless by now, sorry, but I have another question! One of the compromises I'm struggling with, in looking for a new van, is the onboard shower. I have surfer friends who just use one of the 'solar showers', the black water carriers that heat up whilst they are out surfng, that you then hang up and rinse off the salt. That works fine when you're in swimming trunks and the water run off is only saltwater and it goes onto the beach. For use on small campsites or wild camping, I'd prefer some privacy and I'd be worried about contamination if I'm using soaps/shower gel. There are plenty of shower enclosures out there, but most have no floor or way of collecting the water. Best I've turned up so far is: www.indigoblueleisure.com/drainfloorcapture.phpbut the shower enclosure to fit it is might pricey! I'm also not entirely clear how you drain it afterwards. The other extreme is something like this: www.funkyleisure.co.uk/sea-to-summit-kitchen-sink-256-p.aspbut it's difficult to tell the diameter even for the bigger option. Anybody tried either of these options or got better ideas? Jane

What about a child's paddling pool for catching the water? I have read that as a solution to the problem. To my mind a strip wash with a bowl of hot water is quicker and easier and probably just as efficient, providing that you have somewhere private to strip off.

What about a child's paddling pool for catching the water? I have read that as a solution to the problem. Good call! That definitely sounds like a possibility. To my mind a strip wash with a bowl of hot water is quicker and easier and probably just as efficient, providing that you have somewhere private to strip off. Yeah, I know what you mean. There's definitely a point when the 'hassle factor' kicks in, particularly as I see my van as mainly a weekend sort of thing rather than for spending weeks at a time in. Jane

After a moment of inspiration, I turned up one of these as an alternative: www.buckandryan.co.uk/product.php/sn/DRP44151Not as big as the paddling pool, but has really useful carrying handles and can probably be used for storing and carrying things otherwise. I have bought for £10 a hot water submersable pump shower from Maplin's, it works off batteries or a 12volt supply. I am in a trailer tent but I used a kiddies paddling pool. You fill bucket with hot water stand in paddling pool and away you go! I use it inside a double loo tent It gives a really good shower, we have well tested it using it over a fortnight. I am presuming you have means of heating water. The paddling pool though is awkward to empty but it does work.
