Can someone give me some advice. I foolishly left water though the winter in the tank of my Hy Lo. Now I am ready to go on holiday, I have sponged the water out of the tank, but I am afraid that there might be some nasties left in. In a previous post someone suggested that the tank could be sterilized with the disinfection tablets used for babies bottles. Can someone tell me how to do this, how many tablets to use etc:

Hi Eugene I use a liquid called Aqua Sol made by Clean Tabs of Chichester which I bought at a local camping store. It comes in a 250ml bottle that treats about 600ltrs of water, so should last a long time. You fill the tank, add the required amount and leave for about 12 hours. I would put it in before you go out for a drive to get it to slosh around to all parts. You can use baby bottle steriliser tablets I believe but you might need quite a few.
Good luck Colin

You can use baby bottle steriliser tablets I believe but you might need quite a few. The liquid baby bottle steriliser works out cheaper than tablets and mixes more quickly. You can get good supermarket brands that work just as well as the top (expensive) makes. Watch your clothes and van upholstery though, it is bleach and any splashes can ruin things. The bottle will tell you the ratio of steriliser to water and also how long to leave it to ensure sterilisation, just follow that and you should be ok.

We always use Milton sterilizer tablets. They are easy, clean and involves no fuss. I have a HyLo. The tank size is 23 litre. I fill the tank, add 1 tablet for every 5 litres. I let the water stand as per instructions,( at least 30 min up to 24 hours), usually about 1 hour, and then I run off some of the water, ensuring that all the pipe lines are filled with the sterilized water, and let it stand for another hour. I then run all the water off, and wipe out the tank. I only do this about once a year, usually in spring. The benefit of Milton sterilizers is there is no need to clean any residue out of the tank, you could fill your tank straight away after sterilizing !
On a regular basis, after every trip, I drain the tank, open the inspection lid and wipe out any surplus water. A good tip for this is, if you can point the van nose first up a slight incline, you can pump more water out of the tank, as the outlet pipe is at the rear end of the tank, and you are effectively tipping the water to one end, thus pumping more out, with less soaking up necessary.
Regards, Alan.
