Hi there Just purchased an Acty Romahome so thought I would join you lot to gain an understanding of what it takes to be a Romahomer. Used to own Bedford CF2 so am fine with the camper bit, just need to get used to the compactness. You seem like a lovely bunch so please don't throw things at me when I tell you I bought the Acty, sight unseen from eBay *ducks for cover* I am expecting it all to go horribly wrong, be terribly disappointed and will probably lose a whole load of dosh so you can all say "I told you so" when I come looking for sympathy Anyway, if you are still reading this and can ignore my stupidity, I am having problems getting insurance for it as it's a demountable attached to a registered pickup. Have searched the previous threads and tried the suggestions but am coming up blank. Anyone else had this problem recently? If so any pointers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers me dears, Lois

Hi Lois
First of all welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy reading the forum and joining in, we are a bit of a mad bunch (some more than others ;D) but I'm sure you'll pick up a few tips.
Can't really help with your insurance problem as we've got a Dimension but you could try Sureterm Direct, you can get a quote on line by clicking the link on the front page of the forum.
I hope the van turns out to be fantastic and you can come back and tell us what a bargain buy you have made, I'm sure not all Ebay buys are bad ones.
Best of luck, speak soon.
Graham

Thanks Graham for the warm welcome (and for not throwing things at me!) A quick update to my earlier request...... After a further grueling round of phone calls and filling in quotation request forms I finally found Frank Pickles on 01943 850999 www.frankpickles.co.uk who sorted me out with a very reasonable quotation in a couple of minutes. They didn't get scared when I said 'Demountable', they didn't say "A what???" when I mentioned Honda Acty and they didn't bombard me with endless sales reps calling me back. They are my new best friends (for today) Am going to have a little lie down now!

Hi Lois, Welcome to the forum, I am pretty sure Graham meant me when he said some madder than others...but I blame the whiskey ;D ;D Any way, you are not the only one to buy sight unseen from eBay, I bought Bilbo 1 & 2 from eBay sight unseen and have ended up with what I think to be a really cool little unit for a really good price. If there is anything I can do to help you with your new camper, please let me know and I would be more than happy to give you a hand. I have just finished my second re-mount of one of these so I kinda am getting a feel for it I know what you mean about insurance, I was told over £700.00 from one company ( yes I did laugh after I got back up of the floor ) but ended up with Sure term, they were awesome £220.00 includes legal, breakdown, contents and they know it's demountable. Hope you find the forum as great a place as I have, remember there are never any stupid questions, only the one's you had wished you'd asked before you made the first cut Cheers Kiwidave and Bilbo

Hi Lois! & Welcome!
No, you're not the only one! I bought Daisy unseen from Ebay! Had a bit of trouble at first with one thing and another (long story££) but she's running perfectly now and no cautionary notes on last MOT, sailed through! Not bad for a D reg and 22 years old. Got my insurance from Adrian Flux, very cheap, covering demountable, contents and van.
You'll love it! Look forwards to meeting you at a future meet.
JayJay ;D

Thanks again for all the warm welcomes.
The Acty I was trying to buy through Ebay fell through, the vendor took it for a jetwash and sadly managed to get water into the engine somehow. Happily he let me off the deal which was nice of him. I'm now looking at a Bedford Rascal Romahome, again, am sure it'll be messy but she has everything I want and am more comfortable with Bedfords anyway.
Am sure she will need some work but that's part of the joy of little old camper ownership (if my rose tinted memories serve me right!)
Fingers crossed that this one doesn't fall through
Lo

Hi again I finally have a campervan and a right little beauty she is! Again bought sight unseen from ebay but this time a little closer to home. She's a little Rascal with the demoutable. The Romahome seems to be all original and fully functional. Low mileage and seems to start, stop and go with reasonable ease. Left her standing outside after picking her up on Monday and she started first time today after a day of heavy driving rain. To say I am very happy is an understatement.
My only (very ickle) worry is that there was an advisory note on the last MOT that no one seems to know what it was but we shall no doubt find out in due course. Having my mechanic doing a quick safety check on her before I go anywhere too far anyhow.
Thanks so much for all your help during this process, very much appreciated. I'm looking forward to sharing some of our adventures will you all.
Lo

My only (very ickle) worry is that there was an advisory note on the last MOT that no one seems to know what it was but we shall no doubt find out in due course. Having my mechanic doing a quick safety check on her before I go anywhere too far anyhow. Lo There was one on mine when I bought it as well, Lois. The best thing to do (which is what I did) is phone the garage that issued the MOT and ask them what it's all about, their phone number and address will be on the certificate. They usually remember an unusual vehicle like ours, so just phone them and ask. I bought mine from Leeds and phoned the garage where the chap had had it MOT'd and asked them. He said sometimes they just do that in case the owner comes back for another MOT and they've made a note to check whatever it is. In my case, the 'van had been welded and undersealed. The chap at the garage said it was an excellent job, he just made a note of it, but said it was likely to last for many years. The next MOT I had done at my own garage came back with flying colours and no cautionary's at all, so that's all it is sometimes, just a 'note to self' at the MOT place. ;D
