Hello all! After much soul searching for the right camper I finally got a 2001 Romahome Hylo on Thursday for myself, my 8 year old and small dog to travel around in Ireland and Scotland (where we are based). I have no prior experience of Romahomes (I used to have a very old basic t25 vw low top which was cumbersome but loyal) and would love to hear from you and your experiences and recommendations! I would be especially interested to know how you cope with rear view vision and dare I ask how they fare on grass/ muddy park up places? Big thanks! Cathy

Hi Cathy. Welcome to the world of Romahomes. When choosing a pitch, be aware that our vans are front wheel drive with weight and leverage at the back. If wet, try to be level or nose down slightly and put boards or levellers under the front wheels at least. This stops them sinking in, and only a small amount will give you problems getting off. I have always moaned about the rear view and would like to see the rear view mirror slightly lower and vertical to give a better view. Might be worth trying it with an after market one. Best wishes, Dave

Hello Cathy
A big welcome to the forum, glad you found us. I think you will find that Romahomes are great fun and there is a lovely community of lovely people on here to help and advise.
When we had our Duo we found reversing a bit daunting at first but you will find that if use your wing mirrors it will soon become second nature.
Mud and wet grass can be a bit of a problem, we are always careful where we park in wet weather, you can get some yellow mat thingys to put under your wheels if you get stuck, but to be honest with a little common sense parking you should be ok, and there is usually a helpful site owner/warden/farmer to help tow you off if you get in difficulty.
Happy Romahoming
Graham

It is also worth having reversing sensors fitted

Hi Cathy,
Great news that you've bought a romahome - i'm sure you'll love it. ;D As previously mentioned, levellers or chocs as I call them are great for sloping sites. (I use them loads as I hate my bed not being totally flat, apart from anything else.)
My garage where I get my mot and service done on my van recently replaced my front tyres as the tyre walls were worn and might not have passed the mot. He's a good guy and also a tin tent tugger (caravaner!) and knows about camping so replaced my front tyres with van 'wet tyres' which are great on mud/wet grass etc. as i've found. Maybe you could consider this the next time your tyres need replaced.
Have great fun on your travels,
Sooz.
