Big smell or little smell? I only mention this as when you first turn on the gas (mine is in a locker next to cooker and gas fridge) it hisses a bit of gas but only when you first tun it on. there's a small pssst! and that's it, but you can smell it. Apparantly that's ok/normal as I asked when I had the lunken hose replaced at my local caravan place. The gas is under pressure you see and when you switch it on, that bit under pressure is forced out and then everything is fine.
I would suggest turning the gas on at the bottle, and give it a couple of minutes to clear (or waft a newspaper around!), then see if there's still a smell of gas.
If you don't get a gas smell from the gas bottle after that first little hiss, then that bit at least is ok. If the smell is coming from behind the fridge when you turn that on (there should be a separate gas switch to the fridge gas supply) then it needs to come out and be checked over. Whatever you do, if there's a gas smell from the fridge - not the gas bottle- (assuming you haven't depressed the gas switch to supply the gas as that will feed the gas thru and you will smell it there - ready to ignite with the ignition switch on the fridge) don't press the ignition switch. It does take quite a while to come thru to the fridge and switch on if it hasn't been used for a while.
It sounds to me like it's just the small gas pssst! that you get when you turn it on. If the smell stays around at the gas bottle end (ie., that first little hiss carries on coming) , you may just need a new regulator from the gas suppliers. Camping gas in 'vans does have quite a strong smell and just the first little bit is quite powerful! Especially if you're not used to the smell of camping gas.
There are more than a few gas fridge questions in the 'Ask Ant' section on this forum, including one on how to dismantle the cooker to get the fridge out, so that's the next step.
