Can anyone shed any light on this niggle I have with my SatNav? Last long trip I went out with the TomTom (Aberystwyth) it was taking strange little shortcuts! One was on a mountain pass - very nice scenery and do-able with Daisy, but if I'd been towing a caravan There was one point where I had to turn right back on myself, at a junction, on a steep hill - to join the A road we'd left half an hour earlier! Another detour off the A road (very pretty, but) to get to Bala. Another detour to get home from the festival (which I ignored as I was on my own estate and knew where I was going!) It's set to fastest route (not including motorways) not shortest. Do I have to edit and follow a map for every turning and edit out the so-called shortcuts I don't want to follow? (And how to save that as I would like to do all that the night before and not just before I set off!) This is posible, but when it's set to fastest route, why does it deviate from the fast A roads when there's no need to? BTW it's a TomTom One 3rd Edition.

Hi Jayjay... I always browse the text of the route and follow it on the map the day before. If you see an unnecessary loop off a main road you can ignore it when you get there. TomTom will then recalculate when you have also ignored instructions to turn around when possible. I am not sure what you mean by 'edit out'. It is presumably possible to avoid those detours by putting in a waypoint to force TomTom to adopt your preference, but I have never bothered with those.
I assume TomTom's software carries out a comparison of different route times when deciding the route it will write for you, and I can well imagine that this might not be as accurate or practical in areas with fewer roads to choose from, or when the A roads are also programmed in the software as narrow and hilly. I have had a similar experiece in Wales.
I am actually quite happy to enter the journey in sections on the way. This is usually because I want to drive through particular areas or use a particular road. That does mean doing it on the road though. You can save a bit of hassle by entering place names the night before as if you were going straight to each one, and just ignoring the calculated route. Then on the road during your journey you will find the name you want in 'recent destinations'.
As to saving your chosen route, I think the only way is to set the close down/start up preference to continue with the same journey (or whatever it says; my daughter has my TomTom at the moment). I shall certainly have it back for this week's trip to Devon and Cornwall.

I too have a Tom Tom One (UK and Ireland version),I always plan routes using the fastest route then after a bit of research usually tweak it by choosing a "via" location if the proposed fastest route seems to be a long way round. For example just been away to Richmond in N Yorks, heading off from Nr Liverpool the Tom Tom wanted me to go East towards Leeds on the M62 then off towards Harrogate. I decided to plot a "via" to Clitheroe (seemed to be a more direct route to me) which took me north on M6 then off towards Clitheroe. This tweak reduced the journey to Richmond by 23 miles but yet took 1 hour and fifteen minutes longer,at least I wasnt on the motorway that long which suits me fine and it had nicer scenery.I wouldnt be without my Sat Nav,my map reading skills leave a lot to be desired!!

Hi Roger, it's possible to follow the route by details/browse as text and then edit it by going though the find alternative/ then click avoid part of route. I just didn't know how to save that for later or the next day, so perhaps using your instructions I can now. Will have a go and report back.
Dabs, me too... not good at map reading - especially when trying to drive at the same time! LOL! I think that's the best thing about having a satnav when you're on your own.
I just wish the darned thing would plot a straight line with no deviations once in a while!

I have a Tom Tom One and wouldn't be without it, BUT, it does seem to have a thing about Wales. Earlier this year it sent us down a 'road' where we were touching the hedges on either side and had foot tall grass growing up the middle. Then we met the car with a young driver who didn't know how to reverse - - - Until Tom Tom get up to speed with caravan/lorry options I cannot see a way round this in places where 80% of the roads are those little white squiggles on the OS maps. I did contact them last year about this but they had no plans at the time.

I have a Garmin and it has done the same to me. Once in Somerset and once when I was demonstrating it to friend who lives in the Peak District. It wanted me to take a right turn but my friend wouldn't even let me try and take my little VW Polo up there because it he knew it was too narrow. They probably all use the same data source anyway.

Recently followed Tom Tom's instructions to Tintagel, as we turned down a single track (very single!)we noticed a sign 'sat nav error', couldn't turn as we had 2 cars behind us! Thank goodness for a small motorhome, not the first time we've uttered that in Devon and Cornwall!! To be fair it did take us to Tintagel, but it was a bit hairy at the time!! On our way back we followed the main road which passed the small road and 'sat nav error' sign!

On our way back we followed the main road which passed the small road and 'sat nav error' sign! Scary - sounds like my experience on the mountain pass... They are such a good idea, WHY oh why can't they just GET IT RIGHT! I had a little garmin too, but once I had downloaded the latest updates (about two years ago), it went from 'omit motorways' to 'omit highways' and the highways also included the A roads, so I was driving everywhere on B roads if I took that option, and driving everywere with 'recalcultaing' ringing in my ears when I included highways but ignored it when it was taking me onto a motorway... That's when I bought the TomTom, and it does A roads whilst ignoring motorways, but still we have these niggles..... ETA: I also went on a high pass off the A6 and then back onto it after approx 8 hairaising miles... when I got to the campsite, the lady said, what did you go up the high pass for?
