One of the problems that I have found with TomTom is if you go for the "avoid motorways" option it thinks that means any main road.

I have had a Tom Tom for some time and have had no problem with avoiding motorways only when selected. Admittedly it often finds some narrow roads but if there is a close alternative A road it will take that without trouble. The selection I avoid is Shortest Route, that can really throw some challenging situations into the mix!
