Fuel consumption

Trawling back through old threads, I saw an earlier discussion on this topic, in which 50 mpg was quoted as being achieved by Berlingo owners, even when driving fully loaded in hilly areas.

Our 2001 model has achieved an average of only about 40 to the gallon, measured from full tank to full tank over about 2,000 miles.

We have not done any mountainous terrain, nor driven madly at 200 miles per hour, not being that type of person, although we do travel with everything including a spare kitchen sink!.

So, the question ... is the 40 mpg normal for the 1.9 engine, with 50 mpg only attainable with the later 1.6 model, or might there be a problem with my van? It has only done about 35,000 miles, regularly serviced and is in good order generally.

Should I be worried?

I can only speak from my own experience, when we had a Duo on a Berlingo base we used to get 48-50mpg on a run, ours was a 2004 model with a 1.9 engine.

I don't know about hilly areas, I think our best mpg was on a run down to our son's house from Nottingham to Brighton which is motorway all the way and I only used to travel around 60 mph.

If I remember right travelling around town, stop start etc would get around 40-45 mpg.

We have a 2004 Hylo which has the 1.9 engine. I have only done one check, full tank to full tank, and it returned 40 mpg. I think the HDI's are more economic but I am more than happy with the normally aspirated engine.

Sounds like your van is just fine.

Hi Barry.
Your van is fine. The mpg figures given by Citroen saying upto 50mpg are for the Berlingo, not specifically the Romahome bodied Berlingo. Very few owners would get 50mpg from a 1.9D ( unless they had the wind behind them and were tucked in behind a National Express coach!). The 2.0 hdi is a bit more economical, perhaps mid 40s, and the 1.6 hdi is a bit more economical again, perhaps late 40s. A huge amount depends on your driving style, all diesels are at thier most economical at about two thirds power, if you want to get somewhere in a hurry and drive it hard the economy drops quite markedly. If you never drive it hard the economy also drops, so as with all things in life a bit of everything in moderation!

I have a 2006 Duo Hylo with 2.0 hdi engine. Over about 9500 miles my average fuel consumption was 40.8 mpg. Most of my driving on motorways was at 70 to 75mph. Interestingly just recently I used up a whole tankful doing 60 to 65mph and for that the mileage was more like 50mpg.

Welcome to the forum, another Duo Hylo owner we have quite a few on here so you are in good company.

As has been said before I think mpg is greatly affected by how you drive, I am always very conscious of driving with fuel consumption in mind i.e. trying to keep a steady 58-60 mph, braking gently, accelerating gently etc. it can make a huge difference.

I drove at 130Km/h in Spain (naughty!) and got no more than 40 but have a sexy Berlingo HDi.
Is lovely getting there quickly compared with old C15 HyLo @ 50 all the way.

Hi, am a new member and as my wife and I are self employed we can not wait to have a Roma......... home. we own a launderette which is 7 days a week 52 weeks a year. We do hope to own a Roma .... one this year!! Can I ask any one with a Dimension please can any one say what kind of MPG on a early model?? and what was the first year available??? Thank You.

I reckon that the Dimension model was launched in 2003 I think that's right someone may know different, Ant?

Regarding the mpg I think this has been covered somewhere in another thread but I can't find it now. If memory serves me well I think it was agreed that Dimensions do around 30-35 mpg obviously depending on speed and how you drive.
