Saw the post from Derek re: the smell in his Duo Hylo. We seem to have the same problem in ours as well. Most of our trips have been in the winter months so far so have not noticed it that much. Now that at last the weather is getting warmer - yes there is that smell when the van has been shut up. It doesn't take long to go as soon as you open the door or window. It is a mystery. I wonder if anyone has got an answer for us Derek. Moya

From a bit of searching around Google it seems the condition is called "outgassing". These kinds of problems are usually caused by the chemicals found in the materials, fabrics, etc. that are used in construction - in your case the fibreglass - but it can come from vinyl and certain types of wood used in static caravans. The chemicals are released more often from fibreglass which has not been sealed properly, so it might be worth checking for any exposed bits. Also damp can make the fibreglass 'outgas' more, but that doesn't sound the case for either of you if it's worse in the heat. Unless there is something in the Hylo roof fabric Can't offer anymore help than that but at least you have a name for it!

Thanks for that Moya and Pauline, we were begining to think we had a problem van. Our beastie was a winter build and we picked it up in March 2004. When the hot weather came, the smell of the fibreglass was so strong with the door closed, that it made your eyes sting. I rang Freeborn and they said that they had never heard of the problem. When I rang the factory they happily said the fibreglass was still curing, it did not seem to come as a surprise to them. I asked them what I could do about it, and they said leave the van in the hot sunshine with the rear door open for a month or so. I was unhappy at not being able to use the camper during July 2004 and felt that it should not have been sent out from the factory in that condition. The van was fine in the September if a window was left open at night. The smell of fibreglass in Summer 2005 was only noticeable if the van had been left closed in the hot sun and disappeared as soon as the van was ventilated. We still have a slight problem when the van has been left shut up with the sun on it and it is now our third season! We had hoped it would have gone away by now.
It sounds as if it it just Hylo's, possibly the lack of roof lights/vents and the smaller air volume with the roof down, lets hope the prob goes away.
