Hi Mike I hope this doesn't mean you are leaving us! Are you and Sue still coming to the meet? Graham

Graham asked "Are you and Sue still coming to the meet?"
Too true, Blue!! Not sure what in at the moment - hopefully the Hylo, unless I'm inundated with buyers !!
Reason - we've bought a BONGO !!
Didn't mean to, at least, not this quick - but I've been wittering on to Sue about them, and eventually we went to look at some, and she fell in love with it!! Couldn't find one locally that had all the features I deemed necessary, so yesterday we went down to Poole on the BMW, just to see a variety of them in one place. About 50 in one place, that was!!
Unfortunately (for my wallet) there was this gorgeous black one, only just arrived, so as it came off the boat, and it was love at first sight!! Upholstery was very clean - the roof had never been slept in, and a 1995 model with 18,000 miles - a look underneath at the shining engine and back axle was enough to confirm it was genuine.
Obviously wouldn't stay on sale long - we were I think the first viewers of it - and it was just one of those decisions - afford it now, or walk away and regret it later!! Time will tell if it was a good decision - and we'll miss our Hylo very much, but we've come to realise that, after years of camping abroad on the motorbike, a fitted kitchen and sink with running water is not important to us - I prefer to sit on my knees in the awning doing the cooking on a petrol stove, or electric griddle if we have an EHU.
The Bongo can replace the Romahome AND the car - with a towbar on it, we can trail the bike with us - and also it has stacks of room to collect a fridge, or go to the rubbish dump, etc - downside is, no fitted storage, but we tend to take far too much stuff with us, anyway!!
So, the deed is donedid, just hope it was a right decision, but there is quite a following for them over here, and nearly everone seems glad they got theirs - time will tell!!

Hi Mike Yes, that Bongo is quite a high-spec vehicle - just not sure how practical they would be for European-sized people! I think maybe it would need to be a hard-hat area!! And also the upstairs may be a bit difficult to use in real life - plus - the downstairs bed area doesn't look very comfy, maybe a bit like sleeping on a camel? Err, sudden change of heart what You have stirred me up now, I was already brooding on getting a Bongo, the OH is looking at Dimensions though I fancy fitting one out to my own spec which would mainly involve storage lockers, a fridge or cold box, and food prep area. Electric hookup would be a must for the jug kettle, boiling ring and fan heater. Wouldn't bother with gas or water but carry a small stove for use when not on EHU. Just have to convince the wife ;D Derek

Hallo Yamaha Interesting to read about your new vehicle, I look forward to seeing it at the Meet I was beginning to think that it was getting a bit boring being all Romahomes. Also because of our Small Motorhome title I thought that perhaps we should have a bit more of a mix. Incidentally I was going to ask you to pm me with your surname sometime so that when I phone the site at Chipping Norton I can give them some details of all the units that we would like grouped together

You have stirred me up now, I was already brooding on getting a Bongo, the OH is looking at Dimensions though Derek Get her a Dimension, Derek, and save yourself a lot of work. Besides you could then use all the lovely little CL and CS sites around when you have your on-board facilities. Sorry for veering off the topic so much - slapped wrist from the moderators, I expect

You have stirred me up now, I was already brooding on getting a Bongo, the OH is looking at Dimensions though Note for Derek's OH, there are two secondhand Dimensions for sale at Freeborns one around £26,000 and the other around £28,000, both low mileage. ;D Mike, hope you have fun with your Bongo I must say I don't remember having seen one up close so if you brought it to the meet it would be interesting to have a look, and Derek's OH could "hang her nose" over our Dimension. ;D Now I'm straying off topic and I'm a moderator! (Sound of wrists slapping). Regards Graham

Oh dear - hope I haven't stirred up unrest in the camp! ;D Derek - about that hard-hat area - not sure who wrote that garbage!! To be fair, at the time I hadn't had a crawl around one - when you've electrically raised the roof, in the van ceiling are two trap doors - a small one about a metre square to access the upper compartment - you fold down the backs of the middle row of seats, stand up on their tray fitted backs, and hoist yourself up to sit on the lip of the opening. You can then draw your legs up, then shut the trap door. Above you, in the roof, is a fixed skylight, with a sliding cover, like a car. The tent sides have zipped waterproof sides, which can be unzipped and rolled up, leaving a mesh for ventilation. I believe this can also be unzipped if you wish, leaving you with an angled roof, no sides, and the ability to sit there in a deckchair - ideal for bird watching ( 2 legged or feathered ) I have read that some find it cold up there at night - and a wee could be entertaining, 'cause you'd both be half covering the trapdoor - if you decided to be brave and sit on a pot up there, there's also a roof light so your fellow campers could watch - not sure what you would do with the pot then, though Anyway, I digress - also in the van ceiling is the second trap door - this will raise on gas struts ( with the roof elevated ) to give you headroom in the van - if you uncover the skylight you also have light from above. The downstairs sleeping options are quite good - all the seat backs ( front included ) will fold back flat (ish), so you can either use the front and middle seats as singles because of the engine in the middle, or use the middle and back seats if you're planning an orgy! There is about an 8" high area under the seats for storage - I imagine some fitted boxes would be an answer here to maximise the space - these could be made to slide with the seats. I guess some type of awning would be a must with the Bongo to give you some day space, but sleeping bags, etc can be stored in the roof - it has a weight limit of 150kg, and about 3-4" of free space with the roof down. There are built-in curtains front and back, and electric blinds on the side tinted windows. Graham and John - can't say yet if we will have it in time - I hope so, it's already been MOT'd - has to be registered, valeted, windows darkened, serviced, etc - I would guess a couple of weeks - depending on the Vehicle registery office issuing a VRM. Definitely sounds too claustrophic for me, but would be interested to have a look. A cassette toilet is one of the main plus points of the Dimension as far as I am concerned.

Am I right in thinking that the Bongo is made by Lifestyle on the Isle of Wight?
Adam, who now works for Lifestyle, used to work at Romahome.

Hi Pauline
No, the Bongo is a Japanese import, and were never sold new here. However, I do believe that Lifestyle are/were involved in fitting them up as full campers, ie, cookers, sinks, etc.
Do have a looksee if you come across one - it's a fascinating vehicle!!

Just a short note to say our Hylo was sold today! The new owner lives - wait for it - on the Isle of Wight, so is ideally placed to get any of those small things attended to that crop up. I told Michael about our little Group, and hope he may join us. Mike
