As this site seems to follow the same criteria we at AMC follow and that is to enjoy your Romahome, make it as hassle free as possible, and enjoy the company of like minded people, it seems only right to offer my services to anyone who has a problem or thinks they might have a problem with their Romahome. Please feel free to contact me ( I doesn't matter if you're not one of my customers, theres always next time!). Most problems can be sorted in a day and many over the phone. I've been messing about with motorhomes and specially Romahomes lately for over 32 years there aren't many problems I haven't encountered, so don't suffer it, it might not be as bad as you think! Thanks Ant

Thanks for that Ant. I don't think that we have any real problems at the moment, but it's nice to know of someone who will help if we need it. Could you possibly move up to the East Midlands as that would be more convenient for us?

Thanks Ant, much appreciated. We currently have a slight leak when filling with water, if we (by that I mean Graham!) can't fix it we might be on our way down!! and Wendy, don't ask him to move - you need the excuse for a weekend away!!

Thanks Ant,
There's a great site at Baltic Wharf which would be handy for Avon Motorhomes, I can see us heading down there next time we have the need.

Hi Pauline and Graham. Firstly thanks for the web link. Secondly your slight leak when filling may be coming from a small hole that Romahome drill into the filler neck quite deliberately to stop the water backing up the pipe when filling up. Or, if you've got the clear filler pipe it has started to split and needs to be changed for the later grey pipe. Thanks Ant

Ah, perhaps that's it then, it only leaks during filling or if a bit too full. I'll shove Graham under the van this weekend to see what colour the pipe is!

Hi Ant, As a newcomer to the forum, I am impressed by your generosity with your time. I hope it brings in lots of long term custom for you. Perhaps you can help with the following? : I have a type 5 Romahome which I have had on both the Super Carry petrol and Daihatsu Diesel pickups. Don't like the diesel much and hope to change to the new shape Suzuki Carry. After much searching, I can as yet find no info or photos that would confirm that the type five body will fit onto this pickup. Have you come across this combination yet? Thanks Jim

Hi Jim. I've not seen a Mk 5 body on a new shape Suzuki yet, you could try speaking to Adam Coombe at Style Motorhomes on the Isle of wight. His phone no is 07970 672915 he has swap many bodies over in the last year or so and may well have used a new shape suzuki already. Hope that helps Ant

Hi Ant and all like minded romies. We have just acquired 1989 Bedford Rascal with Romahome attachment. Not sure of the roma's actual age. We are struggling with finding info for the unit. e.g booklets/manuals and are therefore rather in the dark as to what the various switches etc do!! Has anyone out there a kind heart and willing to help us, we have already made new curtains etc and it's looking very pretty, we just need to use it now. Thanks for any advice.
Sue

Hi Jane. It sounds as if your fridge has not been run for a while, it may need to come out and be inverted for a few mins then tried again, if that doesn't cure it there may be a lack of coolant gas in the fridge whih means replacement I'm affraid. Ant

Hi Ant,
I just wanted to thankyou for all the help and advice that you gave me when my romahome roof wasnt working and I was quite stressed as we were hoping to get away that weekend. It is very difficult to get caravan garages to even take a look. Anyway South yorkshire caravan sorted it out for me with your help. It was the battery that was faulty so not enough power was getting to the compressor. We had a brilliant weekend, so thankyou so much Ant!!!
Jane

Hi Ant. My fridge didn't work last week either when the last trip it was icing up. Do you really mean tip it upside down for a few minutes? Thanks, Jax

Hi Jax. Yes, it works most times unless you have actually lost the coolant gas in which case the fridge needs replacing. Ant

Well Ant, a job not to be tackled until your strength is up! I eventually managed to get the **** fridge out and turned it upside down and nothing leaked so I connected the power cable and nothing happened. After a breather I thought I would check out to make sure power was getting through because that was one of my concerns. When I went back I thought blow it, I'll just put it back together again and call Ant. But when I went to lift it, the back was hot so that settled that. Power definitely getting through. Right, I thought, try upside down again! This time it gurgled a fair bit and I decided to leave it for 15 minutes before connecting it back to the power. Still no joy in terms of it getting cold inside, but I'd had enough and I set about putting the blessed thing back in its gap again which now seemed much smaller than when I got it out! I'll just try connecting it to the power again, I thought (amongst other **** thoughts) and go and have a bath as I was filthy and knackered. ...... Just went out to check and ITS WORKING!!) Thanks a million Ant. I thought your "upside down" advice was a bit far fetched but it worked!! You're an absolute star and thank you, thank you. Jax.

Hi Jax. You have just experienced my normal working day! 25 years of Romahome repairs you tend to pick up the odd short cut. The fridge problem is one of dry tubes not allowing the capillary action to move fluid around the system freely, by turning it upside you effectively wet the tubes allowing the fluid to move more easily when heated. So it may seem a bit strange to upend it but there is method in the madness. Glad its sorted now. Ant

Hi, especially to Ant... my fridge isn't working either, although I don't know when it stopped working as I've only just bought my romahome. It may not work at all period. I need to use gas, but can't see a spark from the piezo device, neither can I detect any gas getting through. About to get someone to check this out.. really could do without buying a new one. HotpointRm122f is the model, probably as old as the van (bedford Rascal F reg)!

YAY!!!! ;D ;D ;D SUCCESS
Thanks to reading through all the advice, etc - I tried tipping the fridge upside down and left it for15 minutes, lots of gurgles. While I had it out, I checked all the gas connections with washing up liquid to see if there were any leaks (there weren't) and hoovered out underneath (yucky). I also checked that the air hole/flue wasn't blocked. Then I looked while it was upside down to see where exactly the piezo igniter made a spark! Right at the back. It was definately sparking, and now I knew where to look.
Tipped it back the right way, still suspecting that it wasn't going to work... hooked up the gas and turned it on. It took a whiley to ignite the gas flame, but eventually the gas got through (must have been quite a long time, years maybe since it was used) and after half an hour it was getting cooler in there! The bar thingy (girl techno talk) at the back was getting warm so I reckon it's going to work after all! ;D
Thank you thank you to all who have posted about what to do with fridges (and the explanation of why it's sometimes necessary to upend them) from Ant. Simply great, I'm made up!
Now to deal with the gas cooker/gas supply bottle space prob - but that's another story!

Hi Joan. If your fridge pipes are all coppery rather than silvery then they don't need changing, if the pipe looks silver and armoured then it needs changing every five years ( I would change it for a copper pipes that doesn't need changing ever again!) Ant

I was just going to ask about gas pipes, because I had a look at mine last night and wasn't entirely happy with what I was seeing - the armoured type and not in perfect nick. Seems the answers are here already. My better half and I will be in Bristol very soon to visit my daughter. I'd like to get you to fix the pipes Ant. How long would the work take?
