Hi all What meals do you have when you are camping, it doesn't have to be beans and sausage. Pauline has put some of our favourite recipes on the website HERE, all tried and tested in our Romahome, give them a try and let us know what you think. Can you do better? Have you got a favourite recipe you cook when you are away in your van? We love to hear from you. Send us your recipe (with a picture if possible but not essential) and we will publish it on the web site with an acknowledgement. Send your recipes to sitemail@smallmotorhome.co.ukGraham

Jackie and I decided long ago that in our small motorcaravans we would not live out of the frying pan, so no frying pan.But we did buy a tiny pressure cooker, fantastic for vegs, casserolles, curry, pasta sauces, and only uses a little gas and one gas ring, so the other can be used for something else, such as a saucepan full of pasta! We dont barbeque, the grill suffices as does a small wok with a lid.We eat well and healthy.

Get some double skillets. We did away with our oven and don't miss it now that we have the skillets.

Never have time to take photos of our food as we always seem to be in too much of a hurry to eat it! ;D
I would like to get rid of my oven (another vote for double skillet) but in the meantime it is useful as pan storage and bread bin.

Double skillet for us and it cooks a mean Boef Bourguignon - no recipes though as I tend to make things up as I go and with what I have to hand. Need to be flexible in the little van particularly as the local shop may not stock fresh snails etc!!!!
We do tend to use lots of Cajun/ Jerk seasoning or garlic and herbs on chicken or pork which is lightly fried or BBQd and served with dressed salad and fresh bread.
Our veggie option is often one of the prepared pasta packs with an olive oil and tomato sauce and what is left in veg rack, bit cheatie but easy. Always take loads of herbs with me and my bottle of Tabasco/Habanero.
Pauline and Graham: your recipes look lovely and yummy. You must be so organised.
Ian : Where did you get your tiny pressure cooker, I miss mine and need a little one at home and could also use it in van.

If we are going away for a couple of nights e.g. weekend we tend to plan what we are having before we go away and then take the necessary ingredients, of course if its longer then we make for the nearest decent supermarket to get our goodies.
I must say cooking in the van is part of the fun of a camping trip for us. Well actually when I say "us" Pauline does most of the cooking and I usually sit with a beer/wine ready to enjoy the outcome. ;D My excuse is there isn't room in the galley for two people.
I come into my own in summer when we get the bbq out (why is it always a man's job?), we don't just have the usual beef burgers or sausage, we like to try different things like marinated chicken, steaks, kebabs etc. All this talk is started to make my tummy rumble.

Beginning of this year I bought a 'Kuhn Rikon' pressure cooker - quite pricey but top notch. At the time I found a good offer on-line. Hardly any hissing or steam and a wide range of sizes and shapes to suit needs. I use it almost every day at home and took it round France in the Roma - couldn't manage without it now. It also works with an induction hob. I got a Belling single such hob at the same time and the two are so efficient. (Personally I prefer the eating to the cooking so the quicker it's ready the better!!) I haven't tried the hob in the van although there are 6 power setting on it so it could match the available amperage available on site. Also I hardly ever use EHU but the pressure cooker works fine with the van gas hob - once it's reached pressure you've a job turning the gas low enough - so it's quite economical on gas.

Some time ago I purchased a Remoska having seen it being used in the UK and Southern Spain camp sites, what a little gem, though pricey best thing I ever purchased, jacket potatoes out of this world, check it out on the link below: www.lakeland.co.uk/standard-remoska!REG-electric-cooker/F/C/pots-pans-remoska/product/2511 Bryan

Hi Bryan
Yes I've heard other people singing the Remoska praises, in fact I think there is a thread on here somewhere about them. They are a bit pricey though.

Graham and you have to have EHU to make it work! We try and manage without electricity whenever possible. I've only ever heard good things about the Remoska and have thought about one for use at home as well as occasional camping use.

We do as little cooking as possible, it's not part of our "enjoyable breaks". We plan our menu before we go, and always factor in fish & chips. Breakfast is always cereal or toast, lunch is fresh bread, cheese, ham, that sort of thing, and for evening meal there are so many convenience foods ie. Heinz thick soup, 5 min. rice, tin currys and sweet and sour, stuff that we never eat when home, but makes a change when we are away. The main thing for us is that we live such busy lives, that when we do get a break, we don't want to spend time cooking !

Perhaps we should start a thread for heathy eating convenience foods. Derek

Hello Viv, the little pressure cooker can be found on the Amazon website, its a tefal P4090732, priced at £38. You will love it, totally safe and neat. Some Ironmonger chainstores sell them too, although they go for the bigger ones mainley. Happy days - Ian

Hi Ian
Thanks for info.
We did see the R25 and it is very nice. However we will stick with the Outlook as the new one did not offer more facilities than we actually have or need now, except a bit more space. We are looking for a van with separate cassette loo compartment rather than the half cupboard with basin on top option. The new one does not offer that and it is bigger than the Outlook.
We are off to the NEC on Monday to look at the Nu Venture. We like the layout of the old style Nu Venture but not sure if the new one is same size, if larger we will not be interested.
I am sure the R25 will be a success particularly for new purchasers as it looks stunning and has a bike rack and BBQ gas link. Us, we just want the separate loo!

Mike, Thanks for reminder but we are actually going up to Wyre Forest on Monday and staying at campsite overnight and then on to show on Tuesday morning. Nice campsite right next door to one of the best carvery/restaurants in the country. Dinner with friends who live nearby, a glug of wine and then bed.
Graham: You have good taste Graham, the Vesta Chow Mein with crispy noodles was yummy. I don't think it resembles chinese in any way but it is tasty. Was it chicken, if it was I never got any in mine?
